Are they looking for a singer or an endorsement deal? Dueling singing competition judges Nicki Minaj and Adam Levine will both sign deals to develop a line of products for a mega department store, the New York Post reports.
Despite appearing on rival sing-offs, American Idol’s Minaj and The Voice’s Levine have both agreed to create fashion, accessories and housewares for the as-yet-unnamed retailer (but think large, affordable and American, à la Walmart). The lines will debut for holiday 2013.
Minaj has been talking up her clothing line for months now, telling Rolling Stone in August that she had designs ready to manufacture and was just looking for the right retailer. “My biggest goal was to make a line that was going to be affordable to my fans and also rich enough in quality that they’ll feel like they’re wearing exactly what I’m wearing,” she said at the time (because no one wants to be caught in a cheap fun-fur bra).
Minaj is already a proven force in fashion, creating capsule collections for M.A.C and O.P.I., modelling Jeremy Scott’s Adidas collection, and releasing her Pink Friday fragrance.
Levine launched his 222 fashion line in 2010 alongside his stylist Aristotle Circa and father Fred Levine, who has his own California chain of clothing boutiques. It consists of jackets, jeans and basic tees—pretty much as advertised for an Adam Levine clothing line.
Nicki Minaj will make her debut as an American Idol judge when the series returns January 16. Adam Levine will retain his gigantic spinning red throne on The Voice when it comes back March 25, while Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will be swapped out for Shakira and Usher.
