Pink and Ellen Degeneres’s CoverGirl contracts clearly don’t extend to Panem. The first shots of CoverGirl’s upcoming Capital Collection, a tie-in to this November’s blockbuster Hunger Games: Catching Fire, show CoverGirl campaigns are more haute couture in the post-apocalyptic future.
The first of two looks (learn how to get this look) is called Luxury (above left), apparently inspired by the over-styled citizens of the Capitol. Nevermind the model’s Marie Antoinette-passed-out-in-the-treasurey ’do. Her look consists of Flamed Out Mascara in Very Black Blaze for eyes and a Clean Whipped Crème in Classic Ivory for face. Those decadent red lips and nails? The deep lip stain is LipPerfection lipstick in Tempt and the cherry red nail shade is called Lasting Love.
The second look (learn how to get this look) is called Fishing (above right), perfectly styled for the coastal District 4. With aquamarine hair and a fin-style fascinator, the model’s surrealist ocean queen eye makeup blends Perfect Point Plus Eye Liner in Aquamarine Ink, and Flamed Out Shadow Pencils in Lime Green Flame, Sapphire Flare and Turquoise Glow. And yes, you can try that blue pout at home—the unique shade mixes LiquilineBlast in Blue Boom and WetSlicks Lip Gloss in Clear Radiance with a black eye liner (Perfect Point Plus Eye Liner in Black Ink to be precise).
The full collection will be available in stores October 1. While the results are undoubtedly beautiful, cosmetics may be a mismatched pairing with the anti-extravagance message of the Hunger Games. The pampered elite of the trilogy are socialites so lost in their own decadence and over-the-top beauty — they consider teenage killers to be appropriate entertainment. Whether fans can separate the story’s anti-trend themes from the CoverGirl collection’s high-gloss glam remains to be seen.
