Earlier this year, Forbes named Adele the seventh highest-earning celebrity under 30 with a payday of $30 million. She was also the only woman in the top 10 without a beauty or fashion endorsement — a fact that doesn’t look likely to change anytime soon. Adele reportedly just said “screw it” to a £12 million deal with L’Oreal. That’s over $20 million CAD!
Long suspect of singers who “sell out,” Adele was rumoured earlier this year to be considering the offer, the Sun of London reported last March that she was being courted by Estee Lauder and Dior in addition to L’Oreal. At that time, the figure reported was £10 million. Even with a cool extra £2 million on top, Adele still walked away.
“L’Oreal was in negotiations for the deal with Adele and it looked to be happening,” a source told British website The People. “But she just changed her mind on it. L’Oreal is gobsmacked that she turned down such a huge amount.”
Adele has previously made her suspicions of musician moguls clear. “I think it’s shameful when you sell out,” she told the U.K. Telegraph. “It depends what kind of artist you wanna be, but I don’t want my name anywhere near another brand. I don’t wanna be tainted or haunted.”
It’s an attitude as refreshing in the music industry as it is rare. Of her peers on the Forbes list, which included Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, the only other musician without a beauty contract was EDM DJ Calvin Harris. Potential backup plan, L’Oreal? Just picture how groundbreaking it would be to have the first bearded L’Oreal ambassador!
