‘The Masked Singer’ revealed a Canadian icon

The competition on this year’s intense season of The Masked Singer (Wednesdays, 8 p.m. ET, CTV) is well underway, yet we’re still overthinking every single remaining celebrity under those lively costumes. How could we not, with performances likes the ones we got on Wednesday night?Following last week’s final first-round elimination, six of the top 12 celebs took to the stage for an encore, when they revealed a little more about themselves and performed an array of incredible songs. We’re talking tear-inducing ballads, country songs that brought the heat, and even an energetic rendition of "Footloose" from the group of Flamingo, Leopard, Black Widow, Skeleton, Thingamajig and Butterfly. What a time to be alive.

A shocking performance

Of all the electrifying performances throughout the episode, it was Butterfly’s "Livin’ on a Prayer" that shocked most. Not because we expected her to be bad, but because we learned that during rehearsals she was actually, physically, shocked when one of the effects on the stage malfunctioned underneath her feet. This is the price of masked fame—not only do you have to perform in hot costumes, but the props may or may not be out to get you.

Obviously everyone was okay in the end since it was just a scare, and we’re happy for that. Butterfly has proven to be one of our top picks this season and we want to see just how far she can fly; we don’t need a stage malfunction clipping her wings prematurely.Also, if you don’t believe that Butterfly is Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child, we don’t know how to convince you otherwise. At this point we’d put money on it.

We want to jig with this Thing

When it comes to Thingamajig though, we’re having one heck of a time trying to figure out his identity. We were impressed in his first performance, when he came out of the gate with "Easy Commodores" a few weeks ago, but we were reduced to tears on Wednesday when he belted out Kacey Musgraves’ "Rainbow." We weren’t the only ones either: Nicole Scherzinger basically wiped her face and likened his voice to Baby Jesus. So there’s that.TBH the guy had the best performance of the night, which is why it’s so frustrating not knowing who he actually is. There are plenty of people on social media who are convinced it’s Wayne Brady, which would align with some of the clues and costume details (the ripped yellow pant leg could be a call to when the host ripped his pants on Let’s Make a Deal and revealed yellow underwear), but we’re not 100 per cent convinced. Yet. The other top guess is Victor Oladipo and after seeing the NBA star perform at the 2018 NBA Awards we know he has the voice to back it up.

Man, this show is hard.

The Skeleton is buried

Unlike the first round, in which the bottom two singers faced off against each other in a Smackdown to see who exited, this round it’s the performer with the lowest number of overall votes who gets the boot. And so this week poor Skeleton was instantly buried by the competition after the audience failed to bring the votes for his rendition of "Are You Gonna Be My Girl."That meant the judges had one last chance to speculate who Skeleton was before he was unmasked, and sure enough Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy nailed it with their final guesses: Paul Shaffer.[caption id="attachment_4551336" align="alignleft" width="960"] Michael Becker / FOX[/caption]Yup, the Canadian icon and former David Letterman sidekick, who has since branched out with his own show, Paul Shaffer Plus One, brought his bones to the party and he definitely fooled us. We were right there with Ken Jeong in thinking it was another Canadian treasure, Martin Short, but we don’t feel too badly—apparently Shaffer studied Short in order to throw us all off.It just goes to show you that with this show, you never really know. And now onwards and upwards to the next episode, which won’t air until that little baseball event known as The World Series wraps.
