It’s 2020, which means everyone could use a little more of the cuteness that is Baby Yoda in their lives. Luckily Star Wars—and more specifically The Mandalorian—delivered exactly that when it debuted the trailer for its anticipated second season this week.If fact, in the nearly two-minute clip, Baby Yoda, a.k.a. “The Child,” is front and center when The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is tasked with brining him back to his mysterious home planet. “The song of eons past tell of battles between Mandalore the Great and an order of sorcerers called Jedi,” the Armorer (Emily Swallow) reveals in the trailer.“You expect me to search the galaxy and return this creature to a race of enemy sorcerers?” The Mandalorian asks. “This is the way,” she responds, as an unknown woman in a hood appears and disappears faster than a Jedi mind-trick. Later, when someone tells The Mandalorian that this is no place for a child, he responds, “Wherever I go, he goes.”
From the early looks of things, this task of returning The Child home is going to be a season’s worth of journeying. There’s plenty of action as bad guys try and take down the title character, and Baby Yoda—showing his wisdom from an early age—hides himself under his sphere-like stroller while his companion takes care of business. That’s about all of the plot that’s revealed in the action-packed trailer, but it’s definitely enough to get fans talking ahead of the show’s second-season premiere on October 30 on Disney Plus. The new season also features Timothy Olyphant in a top-secret role, Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano from Clone Wars, and Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett. Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito and Gina Carano also return, reprising their roles from the first season of the series that snagged an impressive 15 Emmy nominations this year.Critical acclaim aside, The Mandalorian has proven to be such a fan hit over at Disney that the Mouse House has already started working on a third season, which creator Jon Favreau (yup, that Jon Favreau) began writing a while ago. Meanwhile, Favreau is returning to direct in season two alongside Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Weathers, Peyton Reed and Robert Rodriguez, as per Variety. Since The Mandalorian’s debut, it seems like people around the globe have become obsessed with Baby Yoda, in part because of the original Yoda’s lasting popularity following his initial introduction in The Empire Strikes Back. Fans should note that this Baby Yoda is not the actual Yoda though; The Mandalorian takes place after Return of the Jedi. And in that trilogy, Yoda passes away and disappears, so he only exists as a Force Ghost. One of the reasons fans started calling the Mandalorian character “Baby Yoda” is that there’s no other name for that species. Although, The Child and the real Yoda may still be related—that’s part of the show’s ongoing mystery — one fans everywhere can’t wait to keep digging into as soon as possible.[video_embed id='2000508']RELATED: Donald Glover could be coming back for more ‘Star Wars’[/video_embed]
