Going by a few of the outfits we came across on the red carpets this week, it looks as if the effort of dressing for the Met Ball and the Cannes film fest has worn celebs down to the point of basically just phoning it in.
Usually sartorially energetic celebs like Priyanka Chopra, Kate Upton, Robin Wright and Julia Louis-Dreyfus stepped out in drab dresses that put the “blah” in “blahsé” and “meh” in “mehdiocre.”
Click through to the end to see an inspiringly bold act of fashion, just to restore your faith.
Is there such a thing as red carpet fatigue?
Zoe Lister-JonesThe way the middle of this dress kind of looks like sound waves could be really cool, if it wasn’t surrounded by the graphic red velvet shapes that make the dress look too chaotic. The black mesh in between the two doesn’t help it look any less cluttered.Getty Images
Robin WrightThere is so much that Robin got Wright (sorry not sorry) about this outfit. Her hair, the envy-inspiring star clutch, the neckline; everything is on point except for the long side of this dress. Having a less overdramatic asymmetrical hem would be so, so much better.Getty Images
RettaThe design of this dress is so bizarre. The spandex top is a little shinier than the matte skirt, the bell sleeves aren’t big enough to be worth it, and the belt buckle is a missed opportunity for the designer to be a little more creative. Retta deserves better than this. Treat yo self.Getty Images
Priyanka ChopraAlong with her trench coat dress with full train at the Met Gala, this new take on a pantsuit indicates that Priyanka’s trying to inject new life into clothes that previously might be seen as a little stodgy or old fashioned. That’s awesome, but this jacket is not.Getty Images
Olivia ThirlbyThe frilly blouse and high-waisted trousers could make for a cute vintage-looking outfit, but this coat thing removes any subtlety Olivia had. It doesn’t even go with what she’s wearing underneath. Was this just an afterthought? Getty Images
Myriam CharleinsOkay, suspend your disbelief for a second, but this dress actually has potential. In more expensive looking fabrics and with a lot (a LOT) more embroidery, it could be some mermaidy goodness. Unfortunately, it is what it is, and what it is is a hot mess.Getty Images
Kate UptonKate looks very elegant, but that’s about all this dress offers. You could probably manufacture this look from any run-of-the-mill department store in about 35 minutes, which isn’t a good thing. Bored. Getty Images
Juliana HarkavyThe Arrow actress clearly missed the target with this dress. Setting aside the unnecessary and inexplicable sleeve zippers, the flower appliques don’t look organic. It looks like they were stuck onto a bodysuit with no attempt make them fit into the look naturally.Getty Images
Julia Louis-DreyfusAs the super talented and gorgeous star of Veep, Julia should be standing out from the crowd like the gem she is, not blending in in this boring little black dress. For a dinner party with friends this would be a perfect look, but for a red carpet she shouldn’t be afraid to go a little more glamorous.Getty Images
Elena AnayaWoah. Wonder Woman herself probably wouldn’t be on board with this over-accessorized mess, and she’s been known to wear a headpiece and two giant matching cuffs. Elena does play the villain, though, so she probably wouldn’t care what Wonder Woman thinks anyway. Getty Images
Dwayne JohnsonIt makes sense that The Rock would want to wear a light summery look for the Berlin premiere of Baywatch, but this outfit is sooo cheesy. With the sunglasses and white pants, this outfit is a baby blue blazer away from making The Rock look like Pitbull’s larger twin.Getty Images
Danielle PanabakerDanielle’s styling here is great, but the dress itself is such a serious, almost dull colour, and the wrap around bit is a little awkward. If the folded lip of the drape was left upright and the colour was something a little more fun, this could be a winning look.Getty Images
Crystal ReedCrystal looks so fresh faced and glowy, but this dress is not giving off the same vibes. The shape of it is cute enough, but nothing else elevates it beyond basic. It’s a cute cocktail dress, but it doesn’t really make Crystal shine.Getty Images
Chris PineThis is the most buttoned-up and straight-laced Chris Pine has looked in ages. Unfortunately, this double-breasted suit is not only boring, but it makes Chris look way older than he is. Just the littlest modern addition, like a different print than this plain, traditional pinstripe, would make a huge improvement.Getty Images
Caity LotzWho’d have thought she’d take the whole White Canary thing so literally? The purple hair is drop dead gorgeous, but there’s something about this top that doesn’t work, and that something is the buttons and mini lapels. The monochromatic outfit is powerful enough by itself, and doesn’t need the extra details.Getty Images
Anna ChlumskyThis pale lavender doesn’t need to come across as a wallflower of a dress, but it does because of the shape. With the baggy sleeves, high neckline and very little detail to draw your eye, it looks a little frumpy. It pales in comparison to her beautiful bold lipstick.Getty Images
Jessie GraffThis is not a bad look. In fact, stunt woman Jessie Graff looks great. We included this because everyone needs to see this energizing shot of someone doing a full on backflip in a fancy dress, especially after all those drab dresses. Getty Images
