It’s been more than a month since we last left the Pearson family, a.k.a. The Big Three and their parents, Jack and Rebecca, on This Is Us. But it’s been hard to forget that cliffhanger Christmas ending the writers left us with, what with Toby flatlining on the operating table just after he and Kate rekindled their romance.
Thankfully our hearts were mended just as quickly as Toby’s was when we learned that he’s okay after all. That’s right — despite thinking the worst, Toby is alive, well and recovering after repairing a hole in his heart, and now he and Kate are freaking engaged. You’d think we could all celebrate now, right?
Sure, things are just peachy with Kate in the present day, but this winter premiere threw us another curveball when it went all the way back to the day that Jack and Rebecca learned they were having triplets. As if finding out that nugget of information wasn’t stressful enough, the young couple also had to deal with losing money on a sixth floor walkup, finding another place to live, and the disdain of their respective parents. And that’s where things got really heartbreaking. Because now that we know who Jack and Rebecca’s parents are, we feel like crying all over again.
Let’s be clear though. If it were just Rebecca’s judgemental mother we were dealing with we think we could handle this. Plenty of moms don’t like their sons-in-law, that’s just the way it works in life. Plenty of mothers also tell their daughters how to live their lives, and maybe even hope that their daughters eventually become an extension of themselves. But, it’s obvious that there’s no love lost between Rebecca and her mom at this point, which makes us even sadder for Rebecca and Kate. Why can’t we just break the cycle, people?
Anyhow, watching Rebecca secretly sobbing over the idea of living with her mother was kind of the worst. Or so we thought, until Jack accidentally walked in on her crying and went to visit his dad.
We knew it was going to be bad thanks to yet another flashback of Jack’s dad being abusive towards both him and his mother. But holy heck — watching Jack hide his wedding ring, tell his father that he needed money for a gambling debt and that he’d amounted to nothing in order to save his wife from her mother?… Well that broke us. Milo Ventimiglia, you’ve stolen our hearts again.
Here’s the good news though: at least Jack and Rebecca got the money pit, a.k.a. their future home. And as we all know things worked out in the end in that respect, thank goodness. If anyone deserves a little bit of happiness it’s these two, at least for the time being. Sure, not everything will be hunky dory in the future, but after Toby, William and everything else we’ve been through on this show so far, we all need some happiness for now.
Now excuse us while we go and brace ourselves for next week.
