In the upcoming film Ammonite, Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet play a pair of English opposites, digging for fossils in the mid-1800s. They couldn’t be more dissimilar in background and attitude, but as circumstance throws them together, their growing bond turns to romance. Directed by Francis Lee (God’s Own Country), the upcoming art-house film has queer Twitter standing up and saluting. When the trailer dropped on Tuesday the 25th, fans might have at first praised it for the beautiful cinematography and the sweeping costume drama, but the Saoirse stans and Kate fans couldn’t help but hail their new Queens of the almighty bodice-ripper.
“Did I will this movie into being?” tweeted one fan, where a whole host of others used their favourite Gifs, memes and emojis to express their undying gratitude for the highly-expected film. Ammonite, which also stars Gemma Jones, James McArdle, Alec Secareanu and Fiona Shaw, was supposed to premiere at Cannes and Telluride before the pandemic forced the producers to adjust the world premiere to the Toronto International Film Festival (Toronto thanks you!).[video_embed id='1958507']RELATED: How the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia has grown since 2004[/video_embed]It gets better. Kate gave an enthralling interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where she claims that she and Saoirse choreographed the love-making scenes, which veer on the explicit, themselves.“Saoirse and I choreographed the scene ourselves,” she said. “I just think Saoirse and I, we just felt really safe. Francis [Lee, the director] was naturally very nervous. And I just said to him, ‘Listen, let us work it out.’ And we did. ‘We’ll start here. We’ll do this with the kissing, boobs, you go down there, then you do this, then you climb up here.’”“I felt the proudest I’ve ever felt doing a love scene on Ammonite. And I felt by far the least self-conscious,” she added. You can get your bottom dollar that little tidbit had Twitter chomping at the bit. As some tweets pointed out, the film dove-tails off of similar films like Disobedience and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which also were big hits. But this perhaps of all the funny gifs and twitter reactions, this take is our favourite take.
