If you’ve ever found yourself in a group of Canadians for more than an hour (which we’re assuming you have), you know that sports are bound to come up. In spring, it’s generally basketball, summer brings out the baseball fans and hockey is a year-round kind of topic (because this is Canada, duh). This is generally when three types of people emerge: the sports-lovers, the sports-haters and the I-know-just-enough-to-get-byers. Well, just-enough-to-get-byers, we’re here for you with a hockey update tailored to your needs.

Two major Canadian players signed extensions with their Canadian teams and that’s really all the information you need to show you know a thing or two about hockey. Here’s a cheat-sheet on what went down so you can join in on those inevitable barbecue-side hockey chats.

Connor McDavid and the Oilers

So how ’bout that McDavid, eh? Even if you don’t know a thing about hockey, you’ve probably heard of McDavid. He was the number one draft pick in 2015, the best rookie that year and then became the youngest captain in NHL history at the age of 19. Now he’s praised by fans (and even non-fans) as the best player in the NHL. Wow.

He just signed a contract extension that will keep him in Edmonton for the next nine years. The deal–which starts with the 2018-19 season–is $100 million over eight years. Yeah, that’s a whopping $12.5 million a year. Seriously!

Some phrases to use in your conversation: ‘highest paid in the league,’ ‘he’s so young,’ ‘best thing to happen to Edmonton since Gretzky,’ and ‘wow, I wonder how Sidney Crosby feels about that.’

Carey Price and the Canadiens

If you remember Canada’s most recent Olympic hockey wins, you probably think about Sidney Crosby. Yeah, he’s pretty cool, but the guy in the net was pretty crucial too. That’s this guy, Carey Price. He’s been a fixture of the Montreal Canadiens pretty much forever (well, since 2007). Ask a Canadiens fan if they like Carey Price and they’ll simply move some article of clothing to reveal their tattoo of his face. Montreal is kind of crazy about him. And why not? Have you seen him?

Price also just signed an eight-year extension with his home team for $10.5 million a year over that period. That’s $84 million total, making him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history and highest-paid Canadien ever. So yeah, he’s kind of a big deal too.

Phrases to use in your conversation: ‘brick wall,’ ‘best goalie in the league,’ ‘what was up with that lower body injury in ’15,’ and ‘have you seen his adorable baby?’

Now go test out your new-found hockey knowledge. You’re sure to impress.
