The Big Bang Theory has made us laugh and has made us smarter (some of the science must have rubbed off on us, right?) over the past 12 seasons, but it’s also made us emotional. For a show that began as a series that focused on four socially awkward scientists and their hot neighbour, it quickly evolved into a comedy that has given fans some beautiful and heartbreaking moments over the past decade. The ultimate bazinga.
Here are 10 times The Big Bang Theory broke us.
10 times ‘The Big Bang Theory’ totally broke us
LEONARD GOES TO THE NORTH POLESeason 2, Episode 23 “The Monopolar Expedition”
The men of The Big Bang Theory didn’t have stellar dating records at the beginning of the series, so when Penny sends Leonard a number of signals, including a hug that lasted five Mississippi’s and a note that said she would miss him while he was at the North Pole, Leonard asks point blank if she was sending him signals. She brushes off the exchange, but when the door to her apartment closes, Penny admits to herself that she is truly going to miss Leonard when he's gone. Girl, same.CTV
BERNADETTE MAKES HOWARD BETTERSeason 5, Episode 22 “The Stag Convergence”
After a video of Raj detailing Howard’s past sexual exploits, which included strippers, threesomes and prostitutes, is uploaded on YouTube following Howard’s bachelor party, Bernadette calls off the wedding. She eventually forgives Howard after he makes an impassioned plea for help to Penny, saying “Tell her I’m really sorry, and if she doesn’t want to marry me, I get it. But what I really want her to know is the guy that she’s disgusted by, is the guy that I’m disgusted by, too. But that guy doesn’t exist any more, he’s gone, and the reason is because of her. So, if this relationship is over, let her know that she made me a better man, and tell her thank you.” And tears.CTV
PENNY TELLS LEONARD SHE LOVES HIMSeason 6, Episode 8 “The 43 Peculiarity”
After Leonard tries to intimidate Penny’s classmate in hopes of scaring him away from flirting with Penny, Penny becomes upset that Leonard is insecure about their relationship and yells at him that she loves him. The tears really start flowing when Leonard closes the door to his apartment and lets his happiness out in the form of water falling from his eyes.CTV
SHELDON TELLS AMY HE LOVES HERSeason 8, Episode 8 “The Prom Equivalency”
In an attempt to recreate the prom she never went to, Amy and the girls throw a fake prom on the roof of the apartment building. Sheldon is too nervous to attend the dance because of the pressure to have coitus with Amy, but when she tells him that she would never force him to do anything, Sheldon responds by saying “I love you too.” It’s a beautiful moment that Sheldon inevitably ruins by not letting Amy have a panic attack in his room (no girls allowed, even if he loves them), but for a few seconds it was really sweet.CTV
MRS. WOLOWITZ DIESSeason 8, Episode 15 “The Comic Book Store Regeneration”
A central character that we never actually saw in person, Howard’s mother Mrs. Walowitz had become a staple in the BBT landscape. When actor Carol Ann Susi, who played Mrs. Wolowitz for eight seasons, died in real life, the writers decided that Mrs. Wolowitz would pass away in her sleep while visiting her sister in Florida. The devastating scene when Howard receives the call about his mother is made even more emotional when Sheldon, who has a gift for saying the wrong things at the wrong time, actually offers a beautiful sentiment. “When I lost my own father, I didn’t have any friends to help me through it,” said Sheldon. “You do.” We’re crying just thinking about the scene.CTV
SHELDON AND AMY BREAK UPSeason 8, Episode 24 “The Commitment Determination”
Season 8 ended with Amy breaking up with Sheldon and Sheldon revealing to the audience that he had an engagement ring for Amy. The hits kept on coming in Season 9 when Amy told Sheldon she wanted to get back together but he couldn’t handle losing her again.CTV
SHELDON’S BIRTHDAY PARTYSeason 9, Episode 17 “The Celebration Experimentation”
One of our favourite relationships on BBT is the unlikely friendship between Sheldon and Penny. The two couldn’t be more different on paper, but Penny understands how to talk to Sheldon more than anyone. When Sheldon becomes overwhelmed during his birthday party, it’s Penny who can comfort him while also admitting that she has regrets about the person she was before meeting Sheldon and Leonard.CTV
SHELDON AND GEORGIE RECONCILESeason 11, Episode 23 “The Sibling Realignment”
When Sheldon’s mother Mary said that she was refusing to attend Sheldon and Amy’s wedding unless Sheldon reconciled with his brother Georgie, Sheldon and Leonard travelled to Texas to patch things up with Sheldon’s mean and hurtful brother. It turns out Georgie is actually a caring brother who helped the pair’s mother grieve after their father died, with Sheldon going off to college and Georgie staying home to look after the family. It’s always good to get a solid cry out before the wedding even begins.CTV
SHELDON AND AMY’S WEDDING VOWSSeason 11, Episode 24 “The Bow Tie Asymmetry”
Amy and Sheldon’s wedding was peak BBT, with big-named guest stars like Mark Hamill, Kathy Bates and Teller, lots of science, and some truly emotional moments. We held it together when Laurie Metcalf, as Mary Cooper, told Sheldon that she was proud of him and wished his father was at the wedding, but the water dam broke when Amy and Sheldon delivered their vows. The tears came first with Amy admitting she had stopped dreaming about her wedding before meeting Sheldon, then with Sheldon responding, “Even if I can’t tell you now how I feel, I will spend the rest of my life showing you how much I love you.” ALL THE TEARS.CTV
SHELDON FINDS A VIDEO OF HIS FATHERSeason 12, Episode 10 “The VCR Illumination”
After Amy and Sheldon’s theory on asymmetry is disproven in a Russian paper, the pair feel hopeless. That is until Sheldon watches an old video of himself as a child giving future Sheldon a pep talk. The tape was recorded over by Sheldon’s father with a high school football game, but at Amy’s urging, Sheldon watches the tape until the end and sees his father, the coach, giving a pep talk about getting back up after losing. Sheldon realizes he and his father are more alike than he previously thought, and Sheldon and Amy are inspired to look at their asymmetry paper in a new way. Sheldon thanks his father, telling the TV “I’ll give ‘em hell.” We’ll give him tears.CTV
