World Heritage sites are one of the biggest treats for any avid traveller. Not only are they beautiful, but they are often gateways to ancient cultures and customs that reveal much about human history.

Sadly though, many of them may not be around for much longer. A report from the WWF found that just under half of all World Heritage sites are threatened by development. Others face different destructive forces, whether it’s global warming or military conflict. Some of the recognizable sites that are under serious threat are the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, Machu Picchu in Peru and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
