Among the 2016 nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is legendary pop diva, Janet Jackson. Now, there were some great names on the list of 2016 noms, including The Smiths, Chicago and Nine Inch Nails, but none are as worthy as Ms. Jackson, who’s been busy making a comeback, touring her new album, the first since 2008.
Over her lifelong career as an entertainer, she’s had more than a few defining moments. So, in celebration of the reigning Queen of Pop (sorry, Beyonce), here are 12 times that Janet Jackson proved she’s more badass than all those other divas out there. Don’t hate her cause you ain’t her.
1) Don’t you ever forget, her first name’s not baby. It’s Janet, Ms Jackson if you’re nasty.
The second single on her 1986 hit record Control, ‘Nasty’ contained this line, which helped to define feminism at the time. It’s also taken a life of its own in popular culture and even has its own Urban Dictionary definition.
Her long braids in the 1993 film Poetic Justice, starring Tupac Shakur, sparked a trend that dominated the ’90s.
3) Never not hustling
Even before she achieved success as a solo performance, she was part of a team that understood the importance of hard work. It’s not child labour if they’re smiling.
4) What’s it gonna be?
Janet comes to Busta Rhymes‘ rescue in this 2006 music video when, for some reason, he’s dressed up as one of those silver-painted living statue men who stand stock still in Times Square. She shows up looking like some sort of futuristic dominatrix in purple latex and saves the video, if not the song. That’s right, purple latex.
5) Nipple? What nipple?
Remember this little slip-up Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime? Of course you do. Nipplegate not only caused a huge stir in the press, but also caused quite a snafu for CBS when the FCC fined them half a million dollars. “For what, this little old thing?”
6) Look Ma, no hands!
7) And of course, her dance moves
8) Her many, many, wicked dance moves
9) Including maybe the best dance routine of all time
Executed with military precision.
10) This could go on a while…
11) Or that time she rapped about menstruation
Because that s*#! can get heavy, for reals.
12) The Ultimate Icon!
Earlier this summer, Jackson was honoured with the BET Ultimate Icon Music Dance Visual Award. Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe took to the stage to honour her awesomeness with an epic dance tribute. Cool, but not as good as the original. Never as good as the original.
