You’ve probably noticed washi tape in your local dollar shop or craft store and been drawn to the thin rolls covered in colourful patterns and metallic or bright hues. But what the heck can you do with washi tape other than attach some photos in a scrapbook or journal, never to be seen again?

Turns out, a lot.

Washi tape can be used for a variety of around-the-house projects, from large-scale wall art to adding colour to your tech accessories. We’ve rounded up 12 wildly creative ways to use washi tape to make your life look so much better.

Create your own headboard

Instead of a metal or wood headboard, use black washi tape to create a geometric cityscape. A headboard, if you don’t have one, will instantly anchor the entire bedroom space.

Or add personality to bare walls with linear art

If you don’t need a new headboard in your life, you can still use washi tape on the walls to create a work of art. A geometric pattern, as pictured here, makes a big impact and doesn’t require much planning.

Small shapes, perfectly spaced, give the appearance of wallpaper

Cutting small strips of washi tape and place them in a repeatable pattern, like plus signs or arrows, gives the effect of a wallpaper without the actual commitment.

Makeover a set of basic drawers

Even something as common as a set of Ikea drawers can be updated with metallic washi tape. Use a statement-making gold tape and start with a simple design, like a few diagonal lines.

Replace picture frames with colourful tape and create a gallery wall (kids’ artwork optional, but encouraged)

Finally, an attractive way to display and hang all of your children’s finest creations. Neon washi tape will look perfectly appropriate when paired with their whimsical art.

And on the note of frames, get creative with the shapes

Don’t stick with just typical square shapes. Instead, think outside the box and create different shapes to frame your art.

Give any old clock a face lift

Even a simple wall clock from a dollar store can be customized with washi tape. Bright colours look great in a kids room or in a space that has a playful decor, where as black and white washi tape will look sleek and contemporary.

Turn otherwise boring vases into something more interesting

Whether you add one stripe or several, washi tape is a quick and simple way to dress up tired vases or make them work with a new decor theme.

Dress up your spice rack

Don’t settle for a drab plastic spice rack. Instead, use washi tape to add a pop of pattern in a hue that suits your kitchen’s colour scheme.

Decorate a planter or two

Just like vases, planters can quickly be transformed, too. Cat washi tape, anyone?

Upgrade your smartphone and or charger

It’s not just household decor that can be upgraded with washi tape. Create a custom made phone case with matching charger (they make awesome DIY gifts).

Or add colour to your keyboard

Warning: perform this DIY only if you can comfortably type without looking at the keys. Pick a colour scheme, select a few complimentary patterns and cut little squares to fit each key.
