Let me start my prefacing this story: I am currently in a loving, long-term relationship. It’s been nearly half a decade since I dated, though when I was last single, I did give Tinder a try. That was when the app was still in its infancy stage, and honestly, I remember it being a slightly nicer place than what it seems to have morphed into to today. (I also remember feeling overwhelmed by the amount of time and attention using the app required; I deleted it after just three weeks. It just wasn’t for me.)

Recently, on the suggestion of a friend, I found myself scrolling through reddit and Instagram in search of strangers’ digital dating stories. They were supposed to be “funny.” Now, I’ll admit to chuckling a bit, and believe it or not I’ve pulled many of the more-PC of the stories for this list below, but my heart is also heavy.

These 13 stories of dating app encounters going horribly, horribly wrong are guaranteed to make you feel/do at least one–but maybe all four–of the following: cringe, laugh, cry or curl up into a ball under a duvet and watch To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before for the fourth time before giving up on love forever. Consider yourself warned.

The McCafe ghost

Either this woman couldn’t scrape together enough change for a coffee or gets a thrill out of collecting McCafe stamps and bailing. Either way, this guy had a good attitude about it all.

Married at 18, 19, 20, 21 or 22

Anything older = fail. 28 and single!? Gross. Luckily, this guy knows that marriage fixes all.

A sensitive subject

Telling your new love interest that you’re a widow and your wife is deceased is hard. Telling them that you’re a widow and your wife is deceased, but also she was a porn star is even more difficult.

Korean BBQ or bust

Even if this relationship had gone somewhere, chances are, she wouldn’t have compromised on anything, ever.

“Went psycho”

It’s hard to decide which part of this Tinder date is worse: the biting, the punching holes in a wall, the vulgar language or the chasing a car down a street. Oh, or the friend who stood around and did nothing.

Patience is a virtue

When did compliments that turn to vicious insults within an hour or communication become the norm?

If a stranger on a dating app asks you for money, there’s really only one acceptable answer. This isn’t it.
