Halloween is just around the corner, which means now is the best time to start thinking about your perfect pop culture-inspired costume for the annual holiday party at work.

Of course, what is appropriate at your work Halloween party is much different than what’s appropriate for a Halloween party with friends. Much, much different. If the spider-filled ice cubes in your glass are floating in nonalcoholic punch, there are a lot more rules to consider.

Now, we haven’t been to your workplace; if it happens to be the Sexy Cop Costume Store (yeah, we made that up, but it could be a thing), you can ignore a fair number of these. For most everyone else though, a few words of advice: if you find yourself nodding in the affirmative as you go through this list, there’s a good chance that your Halloween costume is not safe for work.

Just remember, nothing is scarier than getting called in to human resources.

1. Does your costume require you to buy special underwear? It’s NSFW.

NBC

2. Does your costume require you to wear no underwear? It’s NSFW.

Paramount

3. Could more than 50% of your costume be used in bedroom role-playing? It’s NSFW.

Giphy

4. If your coworker Susan turns the thermostat down to 65 AGAIN (enough Susan!) is it possible you may get hypothermia? It’s NSFW.

Giphy

5. Does your costume require the word ‘sexy’ in front of its description? Cop, librarian, firefighter, nurse, and even nun, it’s NSFW.

Tumblr

6. Actually, any word you wouldn’t say in HR makes a costume NSFW.

Giphy

7. Is your costume you dressing up as someone else at work? Then it’s NSFW.

NBC

8. Would you be embarrassed to be pulled over in your car on the way to work while wearing your costume? Then it’s NSFW.

Giphy

9. Does your costume show more skin than your typical casual Friday outfit? Then it’s NSFW.

Giphy

10. Is your costume either politically or religiously based? Then it’s NSFW.

Imgur

11. Are you dressing up as an actual person who is incarcerated? Then your costume is NSFW.

20th Century Fox

12. Are you unable to reach your keyboard/stock shelves/speak on the phone while wearing your costume? Then it’s NSFW.

NBC

13. Is there a child’s version of your costume? This one could go either way. If there is no child’s version because you’re a Game of Thrones character, that’s fine. If it’s because Party City doesn’t carry Jr. Dominatrix, it’s NSFW.

14. Are you planning on changing your appearance by altering your race? Then it’s NSFW and NSFL (Not Suitable for Life).
