It seems like we all have a friend (or a friend of a friend) who once worked at a fast food joint, and swore off certain menu items because of the horror stories of how those items are made.
Sometimes those stories stick and we adjust our own fast food choices accordingly; other times it’s easier to just eat in bliss. But after reading a recent Reddit discussion devoted to the topic, it’s like we can’t unsee all of the comments from actual fast food workers urging us what not to eat at popular chains.
From McDonald’s and Tim Hortons to Subway and Dairy Queen, here are just a few choice items that you should probably never, ever order.
14 things you should never order at a fast food joint
Subway: Oven Roasted Chicken“At our subway, the ‘Oven Roasted’ chicken was actually boiled in a microwave.” – Hotpotabo Subway
Wendy's: Fries“My brother’s girlfriend used to work at Wendy’s and there was [a] 'They aren't old until they’re sold'" rule about the fries. – WrinklestillskinWendy's
Tim Hortons: Donuts“The donuts [at Tim Horton’s] are never made from scratch they're shipped to the store partially baked and frozen solid, they can be stored for months at a time if people are bad at rotating new product to the back.” – The AngriestDwarfFlickr
Panera: Caramelized Onions“Anything that has caramelized onions [at Panera]. We only have one bag on the thaw chart because it's a waste to put more on. It sits there for about a week.” – TheTallOne93Panera
Starbucks: Breakfast Sandwiches“Any of the breakfast sandwiches from Starbucks. The list of ingredients is bigger than the sandwich itself and its all frozen and thawed, just like the pastries. I can't believe the number of times people believe we have someone making our pastries in the back of a small cubicle location.” – JohnnyThundaFlickr
KFC: Gravy“Former KFC cook here, I recommend that you don't consume the KFC gravy. It is primarily made of the filthy oil that stores up at the bottom of the cookers over the day and is then served to customers the next day. Also, the "potato" in potato and gravy is literally just flour, there is no potato at all whatsoever.” - JoeyBosaYouTube
McDonalds: Filet-o-Fish"Don't order the Filet-o-Fish [at McDonald’s]. Before we put it in the oil it's like some sort of hard, crusted over sponge. I don't mess with that shit." – MenaclingMcDonalds
Swiss Chalet: Dark Meat“Don't ever order the dark chicken meat [at Swiss Chalet]. They usually have tons of it and it sits in a drawer until usually kids order it. Every night they use the left over chicken for the next days chicken on kaisers.” – Lilblacksheepsie Flickr
Pizza Hut: The Salad Bar“Former Pizza Hut waiter: Don't eat from the salad bar. It's days old. Especially the unpopular bits.” – Chasealex2 Flickr
Wendy's: Chili“Wendy's chili meat is made of the hamburgers that were on the grill too long to serve to customers, put in an overhead bin for 4 hours (I’ve seen them in there over 8) and then frozen for a week.” – Sprice5531 YouTube
A&W: Onion Rings "For There"“At A&W: Don't order onion-rings to eat-in. Always order rings ‘to go’ because the ‘to go’ onion ring bag holds more than the metal serving-baskets we serve the ‘eat-in’ rings in.” – GastonBastardo Flickr
Subway: Breakfast Eggs“The eggs come in as completely frozen disks, which is pretty gross.” - MacDerpson Subway
Anywhere: Fountain Pop“Fountain Soda. The lines that deliver the soda to the fountain machine are never flushed and usually have mold in the lines.” – Jtpolo23 Flickr
Domino's: Parmesan Bread Bites“If you say how the parmesan bread bits were prepared [at Domino’s], I don’t think you would want to eat them anymore.” – KessyTRel Flickr
