The Academy Awards are a time to honour the best in film from the past year. They’re also a great place for celebrities to debut new relationships, confirm that they’re still going strong with their partner, or make a final appearance before announcing the predictable ‘we wish the best for one another’ statement that’s been written by their PR team. There should be Oscars given out for Best Couple Still Trying to Act Like a Couple While Secretly Hating One Another.
Ahead of this year’s Academy Awards, we’re looking back at some of the most important and impactful moments in film…award show red carpets. We had to take a breath in the middle of that thought and pause for dramatic effect. We’re coming for that Oscar!
Here are 15 couples you forgot walked the Oscars red carpet together. Slay Salma, slay.
15 couples you forgot went to the Oscars together
DONALD SUTHERLAND AND JANE FONDA, 1971The two acting legends dated in the early 1970s after starring together in Klute. For her part in the film, Fonda took home an Oscar. It’s nice to come out of a relationship with a trophy.Getty Images
BROOKE SHIELDS AND MICHAEL JACKSON, 1981The pair were reportedly ‘very good friends’ according to Shields, even though the actor was 15 and the King of Pop was 22 when they attended the Oscars together in 1981. In the grand scheme of things, it’s sadly the least troubling headline about MJ we’ve read this year.Getty Images
CHER AND VAL KILMER, 1983Cher and Kilmer were introduced at a party by Meryl Streep and dated for a few years. If Meryl brings a couple together, do they automatically get to go to the Oscars?Getty Images
MATTHEW BRODERICK AND HELENA BONHAM CARTER, 1987Rising stars Matthew Broderick and Helena Bonham Carter presented together at the 1987 Oscars and sadly do not make the list of the coolest couple of the 1980s, which is what we would have preferred. Getty Images
SARAH JESSICA PARKER AND ROBERT DOWNEY JR., 1989Before SJP and Matthew Broderick became a tiny, perfect couple, Parker had a long relationship with Robert Downey Jr. The pair dated from 1984 until 1991, which by Hollywood/Carrie Bradshaw standards is an eternity. Getty Images
GEENA DAVIS AND JEFF GOLDBLUM, 1989Geena Davis won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The Accidental Tourist while she and Jeff Goldblum were married, but lost out on the trophy in 1992 for Thelma and Louise after the couple split. On the flip side, Jeff Goldblum has zero Oscar nominations, so the good luck doesn’t go both ways.Getty Images
JULIA ROBERTS AND KIEFER SUTHERLAND, 1989Roberts was up for her first Oscar for her role in Steel Magnolias in 1989, a film that makes us cry just thinking about it. The actor later went method for Runaway Bride, with Roberts and Kiefer breaking up only three days before they were supposed to wed in 1991. Actors, amirite?
MADONNA AND MICHAEL JACKSON, 1991Who do you take to the Academy Awards when you’re the most famous person on the planet? The other most famous person on the planet.Getty Images
JULIETTE LEWIS AND BRAD PITT, 1992What’s more surprising, that we totally forgot these two dated for four years and starred in Kalifornia together, or that Juliette thought cornrows were a good idea? The 19-year-old was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Cape Fear and she brought 29-year-old boyfriend Brad Pitt, who was on the brink of breaking in Hollywood. Getty Images
CINDY CRAWFORD AND RICHARD GERE, 1993Model Cindy Crawford and actor Richard Gere were married from 1991 until 1995, which meant they spent the early 90s being the hottest couple on the Oscars red carpet. It’s a tough job, but someone with legs that go on for a mile has to do it.Getty Images
OWEN WILSON AND SHERYL CROW, 2000Remember when these two dated for a hot minute? Neither do we, but Crow did write a song about Wilson, so it must have been legit.Getty Images
JULIA ROBERTS AND BENJAMIN BRATT, 2000The curse of Best Actress winners taking home a trophy and losing their partner continued with Julia Roberts. The actor won for her role in Erin Brockovich and called it quits with boyfriend Benjamin Bratt shortly after. Getty Images
JENNIFER LOPEZ AND CHRIS JUDD, 2002Jennifer Lopez’s first marriage was to waiter Ojani Noa, with the two divorcing after less than a year together, but they did have enough time to attend the 1997 Oscars together. Things got ugly fast, with Lopez suing her ex to stop him from publishing a book about their relationship. Lopez later attended the 2002 Oscars with husband Chris Judd and the pair divorced after a year. So yeah, not much learned. Getty Images
SALMA HAYEK AND ED NORTON, 2003Another couple from the early 2000s that have us questioning our memory is Salma Hayek and Ed Norton. Right, these two were a thing! On a side note, Hayek literally hasn’t aged in 15 years. We are shook.Getty Images
BRAD PITT AND ANGELINA JOLIE AND HER LEG, 2012Brangelina is still relatively fresh in our memories, so we remember them walking the red carpet together in 2012. But we had almost forgot about the third member of their party – Angelina’s leg. Did memes even exist before this red carpet moment?Getty Images
