According to TV ratings, late night shows have seen an incredible spike in viewership in the past few months. The cause? Every host’s favourite punching bag: Donald Trump. People just can’t get enough of that satirical criticism of the new president.

Critics say that with the 2015 shake-up of the whole nightly line up, hosts needed something to ground themselves and find their grooves at their new shows. The oppositional force of Donald Trump and the large, controversial nature of his presidential campaign offered comedians exactly what they needed.

Late night comedy also offers a way for the public to process political events with insight and humor from trusted sources. If the only news you get is from Colbert, at least you know you’re in good hands.

Now that we’re thinking about all those late night Donald Trump quips, let’s take a look back at our favourite moments when Donald Trump was the real star of late night.
