Dear World Wide Web (WWW),
You’ve come a long way, baby. You were initially created as a tool to help scientists communicate around the globe (seriously, we’re not joking) but you’ve given us oh-so-much more in your 25 years—namely, a seemingly endless supply of ridiculous viral videos, showcasing the best (read: worst) the human race has to offer. Sure, you’ve introduced us to other things, too—delicious recipes, doge memes and “cyberchondria”—but nothing beats watching someone make a complete fool of him or herself on the ol’ WWW. And let us not forget the pets (crazy cats, we’re looking at you) and cherub-cheeked babies, who try their darnedest to give those feisty felines a run for their money.
So on this, your 25th birthday, we want to say, thank you. Thank you for bringing these glorious characters into our lives. Here’s to another quarter century of hilarious introductions. Because, honestly, our lives wouldn’t be the same without these guys:
1. Drivers who need to have their licences suspended immediately
Do you struggle with parallel parking? Does waiting at a stoplight raise your blood pressure? Not to fret. These amazingly bad drivers will make you feel better. People have been uploading traffic- and dashboard-camera videos (thanks Russia) for years. Hopefully, the above drivers were shamed into enrolling into a driving school ASAP.
2. Annoyingly adorable kids doing annoyingly adorable things
Babies. Everyone loves babies. Yeah, they puke a lot, keep us up at night and give us attitude when we don’t listen to them but they’re so cute. Who can resist a 3-year-old boy who lip-syncs to Korn in the back seat of a car? No one, that’s who! While we’ve been inundated with one too many my-baby-has-the-funniest-laugh videos, they’re here to stay, so let’s make the best of it, shall we?
3. Cats: Rulers of the World Wide Web
You can’t talk about the WWW without mentioning cats. It’s not known exactly when cats took control of it—around 1990, by our estimation. For every annoyingly adorable baby video uploaded to YouTube, 100 cat videos are added to the mix. We humans love our cats and aren’t afraid to show it. Without people uploading kitty videos to the World Wide Web, millions wouldn’t know that cats can eat with their paws, do battle against wrapping paper and banana peels and bark like dogs.
4. The world’s most awkward and embarrassing humans
We’ve all done some pretty ridiculous things in our past. Remember that time you and your friends created that weird alcoholic concoction and spent the whole night consuming it? Well, it’s a good thing the World Wide Web wasn’t around for that. At least one sneaky friend would have pulled out their recording device and uploaded it. Video views are all that matter, OK! So, whether you accidentally walk up an escalator that’s going down or walk into a glass door, like the people in the video above, be careful. Not because you might get hurt or injure others, but because someone is always watching…and recording it.
5. People with too-good-to-be-true talent
If you see something on the web that means it really happened, right? OK, sometimes people tend to fall for elaborate hoaxes, but we promise you that all of these videos are the real deal. There are some people on this earth who can do amazing (unconventional) things so why not celebrate them. If you could make your eyebrows dance to a tune or use a basketball to paint a picture of Yao Ming, you’d want a few million people to give you a virtual pat on the back, too!
