So there you have it. After 18 episodes of our new favourite series This Is Us, we have to wait on yet another nail-biting cliffhanger before the show returns in the fall with an already-ordered second season.
In case you need a little refresher, the season finale went back into Jack and Rebecca’s past and explored how they first met – as it turns out they were both scheduled to go on a blind date that night; she skipped out on hers to go sing and Jack completely forgot about his because he was about to rob the cash register of some gangsters who took his money. But once he heard Rebecca sing he forgot all about that plan and the rest, as they say, is history.
Or is it? Because the episode also picked up on last week’s cliffhanger, when Jack got into the car drunk in the ’90s storyline, and headed out to see Rebecca’s show. We were relieved to see that he got there in one piece, but we weren’t especially fond of the fact that the guy walloped back a few more drinks before pummelling Ben for trying to kiss Rebecca.
One of the most epic fights we’ve ever seen on television followed, with Jack and Rebecca deciding to cool their relationship for a while. And so Jack left the house to go and stay with Miguel, leading us all to wonder how our favourite TV couple could possibly survive.
That wasn’t the only question on our mind as the show wrapped its first season though. Here are just a few things that we’re going to chew over until the second season comes back this fall.
1. How did Jack die?
We were seriously bracing ourselves for another brutal death episode thanks to Kate’s reveal that her dad’s death was her fault. The timeline and circumstances seemed right, so heading into Tuesday night we figured a car accident was imminent. Luckily that wasn’t the case and Jack made it to the show (and home again, thanks to Rebecca) safe, which means we still have his death reveal to go through at some point. We don’t want to think about it too much just yet since it’s so sad, but we are curious as to why it would be Kate’s fault.
2. What kind of singer will Kate be?
Thanks to a brief flash to the present day storyline in this week’s finale, we learned that Kate and Toby are now settled back in L.A. and that she’s decided to pursue being a singer like her mother. Something tells us that Toby will be her biggest support system in that venture (he did, after all, get her that gig at the retirement centre), but it will still be a long road. Sure, Kate has a really pretty voice. But so did Rebecca, and look where that got her.
3. Can Kevin and Sophie survive?
Oh, Kevin. Sometimes it just really seems like the character can’t help himself, doesn’t it? Right when he finally got back into Sophie’s good graces and earned himself a little respect in New York theatre circles, he went and took a meeting with Ron Howard about a future movie. Okay, sure – he should probably try to capitalize on the opportunity while he has it. But at the same time it was a situation like this that ruined his relationship with Sophie in the first place, and sometimes you just have to stop being selfish and make tough choices. Kevin clearly does not know how to do that just yet, but at least he’s been working on it.
4. Will Beth agree to an adoption?
It’s really touching that Randall wants to adopt a child, seeing how much his surrogate family has given him over the years. And with William gone it makes sense that he’d want to fill that void with another kind of love. But what does Beth want? We’ve seen her support Randall through a lot of stuff this first season, but a baby is a pretty big ask. Remember the episode when the couple thought they were pregnant and how freaked out she was? We can’t imagine she’d want to jump into the adoption process anytime soon either. But, we guess time will tell.
5. How much further back will we go?
At this point we’re familiar enough with This Is Us to know that the timeline is all over the place – we’ve gone from the 1940s all the way to present day. But how far back will the writers actually go next year and the year after? We’ve heard promises of a story involving Dr. K and his history, but we’d also be curious to see Jack in Vietnam. Whatever they decide, at least we know there are tons of places for these stories to go when the show does come back.
And now, the long wait begins.
This Is Us returns this fall. It has already been renewed for two more seasons.
