Sure, it may seem like the holidays are the perfect time to pop the big Q. After all, it’s “the most wonderful time of the year,” according to that one jingle-jangle Christmas carol. And what with the festivity of the decorations, the ugly-sweater shindigs, the cookie-making and gift-giving, everyone is just in such merry spirits that they’re bound to say yes, right? Not so fast. Here are seven surefire things you want to avoid in a holiday wedding proposal, and proof that sometimes, popping the big Q around Christmas can go catastrophically wrong.

1. PROPOSE IN THE SNOW

Yes, it’s idyllic and peaceful when the snowflakes fall, and a light dusting does paint a romantic scene worthy of a Christmas card. Yet, here’s the thing with the natural elements: They’re unpredictable. Why risk dropping the white ring in the pristine white snow, kinda like this girl who accidentally knocked her ring into the ocean. Or worse yet, you could lose the moment to finicky Mother Nature, like this couple did when a wave wiped them out on Dec. 21.

2. PLANT THE RING IN THE HOLIDAY MEAL

Yes, you want to up the surprise element, as you should. But think twice before planting the gorgeous, expensive ring deep within the apple pie dessert following your big holiday meal. Such things can be so hidden, they’re actually consumed. Like this ring hidden in a milkshake. Gulp!

3. FROM HIGH, HISTORIC HEIGHTS

During the holidays, if you’re visiting a tourist-y spot, you’re probably taking a day or two to sightsee. But think twice before you think about whipping out that priceless engagement ring from a historic, high height such as a tall building, or, in this case the Brooklyn Bridge. Because one nervous-tick flick of the wrist and that baby is gone, sometimes for good.

4. AT A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY

God is good, God is great, but even God cannot always make her say yes. For many, the holidays involve trips to churches or temples at some point. And, while professing your love to for your partner on a stage of believers may seem like the perfect, most surefire plan, you’ll think twice after watching this woman say no to the man proposing to her at this Jesus Jam.

5. DURING YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING

Of course you want to do it during a thing you two like to do together, and the shopping event of all shopping events each year is the holiday shopping extravaganza. But if you are planning on popping the Q to your lover at the mall, maybe don’t video tape, or, at least, find out first whether he’s straight first.

6. AT THE HOCKEY STADIUM

Maybe you want to take a break from the family and watch a sporting match during the holidays. And, seeing as you two are sports buffs, it can be super tempting to plot your proposal during the sporting event you’re going to with the family for. But, try to give your partner a heads-up before going live at the big event on the Jumbotron for all the fans to see. Otherwise, you might end up like this guy:

7. JUST BECAUSE…IT’S THE HOLIDAYS!

Always remember that just because it’s the holidays, and that special time of year, doesn’t mean you should propose…..especially if you’ve just been dating a few months. That was the case for this couple when the guy nervously spilled his proposal in front of a live studio audience, and for YouTube audiences, forever after, to the tune of an awkward, insistent, “Can we talk about this later?” *Cringe*
