Break out of your usual makeup routine and save money by using your go-to products in different ways. These tricks are sure to elicit a “why didn’t I think of that?” response, but that’s okay. You can’t think of everything. These are the kinds of professional tips that get passed down through friends (and shared on Pinterest). Tell everyone you know or keep the secrets to yourself and have friends wonder why you look so great!
1. Use concealer as an eye primer
Spread a thin layer of your favourite concealer over eyelids before applying shadow for long-wearing makeup. The concealer will also even out your skin tone and hide any veins visible on your eyelid, so your eyeshadow will look more even and vibrant.
2. Brighten your eyes with white eyeliner
Buy a white or skin tone eye pencil and use it to rim your lower water line (the water line is the inner rim of your eyelid). This trick makes eyes appear larger by extending the whites of your eyes. This is the perfect trick for the morning after a night that you didn’t sleep much because it will instantly make you look more alert and awake.
3. Get an instant eye lift with a pale makeup pencil or matte eyeshadow
Forget surgery! A pale makeup pencil or matte eyeshadow can be used below and above the arches of your eyebrows and then be blended for the look of an eye lift. One thin layer or swipe of the shadow brush or pencil will do, then simply blend the colour using either your finger or a clean eyeshadow sponge applicator. Creating lighter areas under and above your brows visually draws attention to the area while also making the space between the lashes and brows look larger, brighter and younger.
4. Make your own brow gel with eyeshadow
You can create your own brow gel in under a minute using an old, clean mascara wand and matte eyeshadow. Choose a shade of shadow that matches (or is a bit darker than) your natural eyebrows and sweep a wet mascara brush over the surface. Apply the wet shadow to brows for subtle definition and a bit of hold.
5. Make your lipstick last longer with a tissue and some powder
After applying your favourite lip colour, lay a tissue over your mouth and dust with translucent powder. This will set your lipstick, mattify it and make it last much longer. And you won’t have to reapply your lipstick every hour or buy it as often!
6. Use lipstick as blush
In a pinch, a tube of lipstick can make a great cream blush. Swipe the lipstick onto your fingers then blend into cheeks. This works best on well-moisturized skin because it makes blending much easier.
7. Create a custom nail polish colour with eyeshadow
Loose eyeshadow can be mixed with clear nail polish for a custom manicure. This works particularly well with shimmery shades and gives the look of glitter without the fussy removal glitter polish requires. There’s no need to mix up a big batch and bottle it. These polishes can be quickly made on demand in any colour you desire.
Mix about a teaspoon of shadow with at least 20 drops of clear nail polish in a small plastic bowl. Add polish until you get the consistency or opacity you’re looking for — test it on one of your fingernails as you mix. Use a clean polish brush to mix the combination together, or just use the one from the clear polish and clean it with nail polish remover afterwards.
