When The Royals debuted in 2015, it looked like a fluffy show that would be made up of sexcapades of unrealistically hot people, and a few nods to the monarchy to fill in the gaps. Instead, the dramatic series focuses on the pressures of career and family, finding your place in the world, dealing with grief, loss, and substance abuse, while also having sexcapades and discussing the need for the monarchy.
The surprising substance of The Royals isn’t limited to overall story lines, but also to one couple that shouldn’t work but totally does. We should be rooting for Princess Eleanor to find some nice Prince or Duke or Lord (we’re just throwing out titles here) and get away from the toxic castle, but instead we’re still hoping she and her bodyguard Jasper will work things out. Sure, they’ve hit a snag, or two, or many, but when it comes to true love, we think these two have it.
1. Their instant attraction
Going with your first instinct on things is usually the best bet and when it comes to these two, their first instinct was to take off all their clothes and get in bed together. Granted, Eleanor did that with most people, and Jasper was trying to rob her at the time. Hey, we didn’t say they were the *perfect* couple.
2. They’re honest with each other
Few couples who start out with so many lies (Jasper pretending to be a British bodyguard and not a Las Vegas con man) can make a relationship work, and at this point, we’re not 100 per cent sure we’re going to see Jeleanor make a full recovery. But at least now everything is out on the table.
3. They survived Queen Helena
In one of the more messed up mother-daughter dynamics we’ve seen on TV, Queen Helena used her knowledge of Jasper’s real background to blackmail the American into sleeping with her, something Eleanor of course discovered (it would have made for boring TV if she hadn’t). Does it get worse than your boyfriend sleeping with your mother? We’re trying to find the silver lining, and that is that Jasper was blackmailed into it…we’re stretching, we know. But at least at this point, the worst possible thing has happened. We think?
4. Jasper likes Eleanor just the way she is
When Eleanor’s ex Beck returns to the castle, his main objective is to get Eleanor off drugs. Don’t get us wrong, this is a good move. But in addition to getting Eleanor clean, he also seemed to be interested in changing everything else about her. Not Jasper. He likes Eleanor just the way she is. Well, he would prefer if she forgave him for all the shady stuff he’s done, but otherwise she’s perfect.
5. Jasper and Liam are besties
Eleanor’s best friend is her brother Liam. Jasper’s best friend is Eleanor’s brother Liam. It makes family vacations much easier if everyone is friends (minus Queen Helena).
6. Jasper is willing to risk his life for Eleanor
Whether it’s outting his ex-girlfriend and her plans to rob Eleanor, or literally jumping in front of a bullet, there isn’t much that Jasper won’t do for Eleanor. And even if she’s not ready to admit it, the fact that Jasper hasn’t been fired is a direct link to Eleanor’s feelings for him. Aw, young love. So sweet. So messy and complicated and heartbreaking.
7. They’re friends outside of the show
Okay, this last point really has no bearing on what happens in the actual TV series, but we just like when cast mates get along off set as well. It gives us warm fuzzies.
Season two of The Royals comes to CraveTV November 4.
