Summer’s humidity can bring out the frizzies in even the smoothest of manes. Protect those locks with one (or seven!) of these frizz fighters and you’ll have shiny hair all season long.
A note about frizz targeting products: many styling products meant to tame frizz include silicone (which goes by many names) among their ingredients. Although you may have been told to stay away from silicone products, sometimes — especially in humid summer months — you need some extra smoothing. Just don’t overdo it and try to wait a few days between washing (with a good, sudsy shampoo) and serum use.
1. Wen by Chaz Dean Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner, $38, sephora.com
Start your hair routine with a frizz-fighting cleanser. This one skips shampooing all together in favour of a gentler approach that’s perfect for curly, unruly or damaged hair (but will work on just about any hair type). Wen promises up to 50 per cent frizz reduction and stronger, less brittle hair after your first wash.
2. John Masters Organics Rose & Apricot Hair Milk, $36.60, johnmasters.ca
This certified organic, cruelty-free hair milk can be used as both a leave-in conditioner and a styling product. Rose flower, apricot, rose hip and borage oil soften, nourish, hydrate, soothe and treat dryness while moringa seed extract protects and strengthens. Use it after washing and conditioning to detangle and tackle frizz, then add more once hair is dry to smooth ends and style.
3. John Frieda Frizz Ease 3 Day Straight Flat Iron Spray, $14.99, londondrugs.com
This is a magical three-day version of a salon keratin treatment. Spray it on wet hair then blow dry and flat iron for frizz-free, smooth, straight locks for three days (or until you wash it). The best part? We’ve used it on wet hair and then let our hair air dry for frizz-free curls or waves. Using it this way won’t guarantee long wear, but it’s a great running-out-the-door-with-wet-hair solution in a pinch!
4. Göt2b Glossy Anti-Frizz Shine Serum, $7.79, well.ca
This serum smoothes unruly hair by coating strands in water-resistant silicones and leaving it super shiny. It also protects against UV rays and can be used on both wet and dry hair.
5. John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength 6 Effects + Serum, $14.99, londondrugs.com
John Frieda’s strongest frizz-fighting serum combines silicones and silk for soft, smooth results (even for very coarse hair too). It’s also a great product to use before heat styling because it will protect damaged locks from the heat of a hair dryer or flat iron.
6. Bumble and Bumble Defrizz, $32.25, sephora.com
The beauty of this frizz-fighting serum is that it can be mixed with your other hair products for a smooth finish no matter the final style you have in mind. Combine it with a styling cream or gel for maximum hold and shine, or use it before your leave-in conditioner for a frizz-free blow out.
7. Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Sleek Finish 5-in-1 Serum Spray, $6.99, well.ca
Finish off dry hair with this shine-enhancing, frizz-reducing serum spray. It instantly tames flyways and protects against humidity so your blow out will last longer.
