Everyone needs a friend, even if that companion happens to be of a different species.

Whether it’s a lion chillin’ with a dog, or a bunny hangin’ with an owl, we’ve discovered that some animals out there have some really bizarre inter-species bonds. In fact, we’ve covered a few of them before (giraffe vs. ostrich tag, anyone? But even when they do verge on strange, there’s just something so adorable about these pals.

Take this baby chicken and husky friendship, for example. Let’s first remember that a dog would normally devour a bird this small, so there’s that. But this little chick was found on the street with no mom and was brought home until it could be delivered to a bird shelter. Once it arrived, however, a connection immediately formed between the bird and the family’s pet. Now the chick lounges on its head!

Friendships aren’t always so smooth though, sometimes they hit bumps. This dog and cat duo seems to have had a bit of a falling out after the feline decided to hog the whole bed. But when the dog starts yanking it across the floor, the cat just falls asleep anyway. Aww.

There’s nothing cuter than tired, baby animals. And luckily for you, we’ve found a pair of sleepy, furry friends that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. How does a bunny even meet an owl, anyway?

This next pairing is like something out of a cartoon. A dog in Australia is friends with – get ready for it – a lion cub. Their odd friendship formed after the lion’s mother stopped producing milk. Zoo caretakers had to feed the little lion themselves, and the dog came along for the ride. Now just the sight of that cub sends the dog’s tail into a rapid wag. Not to mention the warm greeting they both offer as soon as the gate opens:

These two cats are taking their friendship just a little too far. After they spend about a full minute licking each other’s faces, they start play fighting on the couch. Get a room!

Every so often, you have to put your friends in their place. It’s a tough love that only comes out when they’ve crossed a line. That’s why this puppy wasn’t about to take any lip from another dog, even if it is five times his size:

Monkey love, it’s a beautiful thing. That’s a lesson this dog is learning first hand, as “MonkeyBoo” cuddles with him before bed. This could be some of the cutest footage you’ll ever see:

Do you remember Chester and Spike? These two dogs remind us a lot of them. Barnaby the Great Dane is seen here welcoming Aphrodite the Chihuahua to the family. And from the looks of things, this is going to be one great friendship:
