Mahershala Ali has been a professional actor for almost 20 years, starting with a role as Dr. Trey Sanders on Crossing Jordan. But it’s been over the past ten years, since Ali landed roles in The Hunger Games, The Place Beyond The Pines, and House of Cards, that the California native started gaining traction as one of the most exciting actors in Hollywood today. Adding the actor’s insightful and refreshing interviews and beautiful award show speeches, and we have our vote for next year’s Sexiest Man Alive. Because also, this.

Ali is now starring as the lead in the third season of True Detective, because it takes an actor that everyone loves to bring a series back from being a show that everyone hated. What happened there? Anyway. Ali’s turn as Wayne Hays, a detective in search of two missing children in Arkansas, a case told over the course of 30 years, is already garnering rave reviews and for good reason. There’s nothing Ali can’t do.

HE’S A HISTORY MAKER

Thanks to his stunning Moonlight role as Juan, the drug dealer you couldn’t help but love, Ali became the first Muslim actor to take home an Oscar for acting. If he ends up with an Oscar nomination and win for Green Book this year, he’ll have won his second Oscar for acting faster than anyone else in the past 24 years.

HE CELEBRATES OTHER ARTISTS

Many celebrities use their social media to only promote their own projects, but Ali frequently gives shout outs to other TV shows and movies he’s not involved in. We want to throw a hashtag #confident in here, but Ali just feels too cool for that.

HE’S ALL ABOUT PEACE

Any time we’re feeling particularly sad about the state of the world, we like to go back and watch Mahershala’s acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight from the 2017 SAG Awards. We all jumped on the Oprah 2020 bandwagon pretty fast, but we think Mashershala 2020 is also a viable option.

HE LOVES A GOOD THROWBACK

Don’t we all love a good throwback pic? Whether he’s posting a cute image from his childhood or reuniting at A-list parties with former co-stars like Ryan Gosling, Ali knows how to give the people what they want. Also, this picture is really making us feel like Moonlight snatching the Oscar from La La Land may be payback for how Gosling’s character treated Ali in The Place Beyond The Pines. There’s something there.

HE GETS POLITICAL

Ali didn’t just play political adviser Remy Denton on House of Cards, he also takes on politics in real life. In the past, actors have often remained silent on their social stances for fear of offending audiences. In 2019, we’re not here for that. What we are here for is people with platforms using them to encourage others to get involved in democracy and make the world a better place for everyone.

HE CAN PLAY IT ALL

From sci-fi, to drama, to historical pieces, to soap operas, to animation, we’ve yet to see Ali take on a character he didn’t master.

HE KNOWS THE FUTURE IS FEMALE

When he’s not posting pics or shouting out his mother, grandmother or wife on Instagram, in interviews, or during acceptance speeches, Ali is sharing pictures of his adorable daughter Bari. The future is female in the Ali household.
