Seventy-five-year-old Bud Jones is one heck of a guy.

The Belcarra, B.C. resident was returning home from work last week when his landlord told him that a bear had broken into his garbage. Of course, most people would’ve just allowed the massive animal to take their trash–but not Bud. Instead, he marched right over to the black bear and told it to step off.

The only weapon he packed? An ordinary broom.

“I went up and started whacking it with the broom,” Bud said. “I stepped back and tripped and fell…and as soon as I did that, the bear was on top of me.”

Amazingly, Bud was able to muscle his way back up to his feet during the scuffle with nothing more than a scratch on his arm. Once standing, the bear realized it had met its match and scampered back into the woods. Which is when Bud decided to chase it.

Yes, that’s right, Bud chased the bear away. Not the other way around.

Once the fight was over, Bud called the RCMP, who then sent in conservation officers to lay traps. In a tragic twist, the bear unfortunately appeared again, and the officers were forced to shoot it.

For the record, attacking a bear with a broom is not what you should do if you encounter one. We actually have an entire guide on what to do if you come across a bear right here–so stay safe out there.

As for Bud, he’ll now take his place among the most badass Canadians of all time. You can hear him give his own account of the story in the video above.
