We’ve had to go two whole days without a new episode of Love Island (Monday-Sunday, 9pm on CTV), but good things come to those who wait. Those who wait for a new Islander to join the villa, those who wait to kiss someone in the villa, and those who wait to see if they’re getting picked in the recoupling ceremony. Well, actually, maybe that saying doesn't apply to Love Island at all... On Thursday’s supersized episode, a shocking recoupling ceremony meant the Islanders had to say goodbye to Rachel after Caleb switched allegiances. Consider our copy of Rachel’s tell-all book about her relationship with Caleb and Justine pre-ordered.

THE M.C.M.C. (Most Confusing Mackenzie and Connor)

A lot happened on Thursday’s two-hour episode, but a big portion of the show was dedicated to Mackenzie and Connor, or more specifically, Mackenzie lightly gaslighting Connor. While on his date with Lauren, Connor got the five minutes he needed to take a deep breath and admit that his 10-day-old relationship with Mack (do we call her Mack?) has left him emotionally, physically, and mentally drained. Us too, Connor. Back at the villa, Mackenzie got advice from Rachel, who suggested that maybe, possibly, some people (definitely not her) may think Mackenzie is controlling. Again, not Rachel. Mackenzie just thinks people don’t know Connor. Does she know Connor? It’s been less than two weeks. Tre tried to help Mackenzie out by advising her to be nice to Connor. Mackenzie took Tre’s advice and smothered Connor in niceness to the point where he chose the path of least resistance and asked Mackenzie to be his girlfriend. Oh, Connor. Connor later admitted to the guys that he was ready to break up with Mackenzie only hours after making things official, a revelation that sent a wave of terror through the hearts, minds, and bugged out eyes of the Islanders, who visualized how Mackenzie would react to Connor’s news. TL;DR – not good. Connor eventually decided that the villa was not nearly big enough to deal with the fallout and picked Mackenzie in the recoupling ceremony. This seems stable and probably won’t implode in the next few hours.

LAUREN’S LESSONS

Maybe it’s the English accent, but Lauren arrived in the villa to drop some serious knowledge on her fellow Islanders. These lessons include but are not limited to the following observations.
  • “Some of these people have a hard time being honest with themselves.”
  • “Connor looks like he’s in the sunken place.”
  • All conversations with Connor that take place more than six feet away from Mackenzie make it seem like he’s ready to end things.
  • Beans on toast is delicious. In the words of Caleb: "English breakfast absolutely SLAPS." Agreed.

CARRINGTON GETS CARRIED AWAY

Carrington returned from his date with Lauren and consoled Kierstan by telling her that he wants to get to know Lauren. We never said he was good at consoling. Kierstan tried to make things less uncomfortable by aggressively telling Lauren she’s fine with Lauren going after Carrington, then tells the camera that she’s hotter than Lauren. That’s definitely the attitude of someone who isn’t worried. Carrington did pick Kierstan in the recoupling, but not because he’s no longer interested in Lauren. It’s because Kierstan straddled him during the Car Wash Challenge. True love.

CAR CRASH

During the Car Wash Challenge, which Rachel described as empowering (srsly?), allegiances were broken with a shocking kiss. Instead of picking her partner Tre, Justine opted to kiss Caleb and not just on both cheeks and the forehead. That kiss effectively ended her relationship with both Rachel and Tre and led to Tre picking Lauren in the recoupling. Although Caleb told Rachel he would pick her, a last-minute hot tub time machine talk with Justine undid Caleb’s previous conversation and convinced Caleb to choose Justine instead.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Why does everyone look shocked at the recoupling ceremonies when the last Islander standing gets the text announcing they are being dumped from the villa? It literally happens every time. Anyway, here's where things stand couple-wise after that 2-hour shocker of an ep:
  • Mackenzie and Connor (status: DATING)
  • Justine and Caleb
  • Moira and Calvin
  • Lauren and Tre
  • Cely and Johnny
  • Kierstan and Carrington
