It’s getting really hard to say goodbye to the competitors on The Masked Singer (Wednesdays, 8 pET, CTV). Now that the contestants have been cut by more than half, only the really outstanding singers are left. That makes every single elimination a heartbreaking one, but on the latest episode fans were particularly devastated to see Kangaroo go home. Not even Ken Jeong could keep his sad face to himself when she was eliminated: that Roo gave an emotional and vulnerable performance every single time she took the stage, and you couldn’t help but root for her. Especially when she revealed this was the first time she’d ever sang in front of anyone. Ever.

An impossible task

Fans knew from the top of the episode that whoever went home it would be one of the better singers, because the show cleverly matched Kangaroo with Night Angel and Turtle with Astronaut in the first part of the two-part “Mother of All Face Offs.” Whoever went home, the show was gearing up to say goodbye to a real talent, proving yet again that this is the biggest season of The Masked Singer yet. It’s no wonder there’s a tour, a spinoff, and now a (virtual) after-show hosted by Nick Cannon beginning April 22 for fans to look forward to. The snowball effect is real.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Kylie Jenner weighs in on the Jordyn Woods scandal on ‘KUWTK’[/video_embed]But spinoffs and after-shows aside, the episode was tense from the beginning. The four panelists did a small bit where their bags were checked before they could enter the building, as a secret guard dumped their “personal possessions” on the table. (Robin Thicke has just as many hair products as you’d think he does, but more importantly this show has got to be keeping the sunglasses business afloat right now). That bit continued inside with each of the performers revealing clues inside their own “luggage” to help the panelists—including guest panelist Yvette Nicole Brown—guess their identities.Speaking of the former Community star, not only is Brown a fan of the show, but she is also a friend of Jeong’s. So with his “Bubby” by his side, Ken didn’t get quite as much pretend shade from the other panelists and host Nick Cannon this week, which was kind of a nice change of pace. Unfortunately that didn’t make his guesses any less out there. Fans were probably surprised that he didn’t get more flak for guessing Kangaroo was So You Think You Can Dance host, Cat Deeley.

Something to prove

Kangaroo was definitely not the SYTYCD host, but she was for sure a hard one to guess. The panelists’ jaws were on the floor when she made the big reveal that she’d never sang in front of anyone before, because up until that point they had been guessing professional singers and performers. That’s how powerful her voice was. Her performance of “No Air” was no exception, but the audience felt it didn’t hold up to Night Angel’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and she was voted to the bottom alongside Astronaut. There, with the return of The Smackdown she went head-to-head in a heated battle with the character. She brought it with Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff,” but the crowd was more there for Astro’s iteration of NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” and she was eliminated. So who was under that mask? As it turns out, Jenny McCarthy’s last-minute guess was 100 per cent. For weeks, she and Nicole Scherzinger have been saying it’s a “Kardashian-adjacent” personality, and while Scherzinger guessed Blac Chyna, it was actually Jordyn Woods who proved to be the boo behind the Roo. Who knew that girl could sing? The clues totally made sense though: this is someone who has been dragged into the spotlight for the wrong reasons, who has had to deal with a ton of ink being spilled about her and who really has been vilified following the alleged cheating scandal with Tristan Thompson. Fans who have had Woods’ back or who have been rooting for the influencer to reach beyond the world of the Kardashians were completely validated by just how amazing she did on the show though, proving that sometimes great things can come out of awful situations. Even Cannon told Woods just how much he hoped she would continue to run with this gift, and that she would surface from this as her own person rather than “a friend” of whoevers.“I love this show. Number one, I watch it every week with my family,” the 23-year-old said after her elimination. “But I just love a challenge. I felt like this was an opportunity for people to see a different side of me that not even I knew existed.”Side seen, Jordyn. Now do your fans a favour and keep on singing. In the meantime, the show must go on, and with two more impossible matchups next week it’s anyone’s guess who will go home next. The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 pET on CTV.[video_embed id='1935635']BEFORE YOU GO: David Foster says Katharine McPhee gave him a quarantine haircut[/video_embed]
