Okay, so we know there are like a zillion Game of Thrones theories, prophecies and fan fiction sites out there on the Internet. Especially on Reddit, where hardcore book and TV show fans theorize to their hearts’ content. But after last weekend’s big Season 6 finale, there was one posting in particular that caught our attention.

As you’ll recall, the final episode had a flashback scene in which Bran Stark finally saw his father save Lyanna Stark’s baby. After a closeup of the baby’s face and then a cut to a closeup of Jon Snow’s face, the R+L=J theory (Lyanna Stark + Rhaegar Targaryen = Jon Snow) was pretty much confirmed.

Or was it?

Obviously the writers have been teasing us with that reveal for quite some time now, and they couldn’t just give it all away in the finale. So Lyanna whispered the baby’s name to Ned leaving audiences only privy to the movement of her lips. Not enough! Viewers need more info, and we can’t wait until next season. Thankfully, a lip reader was watching the finale, and posted a plausible theory to Reddit.

“I’m not a great lip-reader, but I’m fairly certain what she says is Jaehaerys,” the user writes. “Jaehaerys I was the 4th Targaryen king to sit on the Iron Throne. He was known as ‘The Wise,’ ‘The Conciliator,’ and ‘The Old King.’ His long rule was prosperous and he was aided by his sister-wife Alysanne, who convinced Jaehaerys to expand the Night’s Watch and granted them the land now known as the New Gift.”

So is Jon really Jaehaerys? Given how Jon Snow’s storyline has played out so far, this makes perfect sense. Plus, if Lyanna was in love with the Targaryen king the way the R+L=J theory predicts she was, it would make sense that her baby was named after someone in that house.

Oh, and an added bonus to the theory? The name Jon (Ned certainly couldn’t protect his identity by calling him Jaehaerys!) could come from Jon Arryn, a character who was actually a father-figure to Ned. Since Ned became a father-figure to Jon Snow, that kind of closes the circle with a nice little bow.

The really cool thing is that this would make Jon and Dany siblings. The only problem is, we’re not sure which one we want to own the throne in the next season. Maybe both of them? After all, the entire series of books is actually called A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones is only the first title). Jon could be the Ice in the North, and Dany could be the Fire of the Seven Kingdoms.

Or not. We never really know with this show, do we?

Now if only it would hurry up and return for Season 7 already.

Game of Thrones Season 7 is expected to debut next spring on HBO Canada.
