What would an episode of Killing Eve (Sundays, 10 pET CTV Drama Channel) be without Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) and his signature laugh? Viewers may be about to find out. The character has been through quite a lot over the past three seasons, but that’s nothing compared to the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day the guy suffered through on the latest Killing Eve episode, “Beautiful Monster.”

Agents of chaos

After seeing his daughter run over her mom’s boyfriend last week, Konstantin was helpless trying to get her out of the detention centre this week. Her arrest (surprising, because why would he not hightail her out of there?) meant that his plans to be on a Cuban beach with his daughter and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) were kaput. Or at least they were as he had plotted them out. Instead he was forced to leave his daughter in jail to contend with her maniacal ways, promising only to return for her. A promise that, as it turns out, he probably can’t keep. That’s because things only grew worse from there. Between a surprise visit from Geraldine (Gemma Whelan) gone wrong and The Twelve essentially tracking him because Villanelle had kind of tipped them off that something was up, the pressure was on for him to blow dodge and to do it quickly. But when he finally put his plan in motion only to have a heart attack beside the train ready to whisk him away to get his money? Well, that was the icing on  the cake. Or at least it seemed like it was. Because this is Killing Eve there was one final twist in Konstantin’s story at the hospital: his surprise roommate, Dasha (Harriet Walter). If anyone can rival Konstantin’s belly laugh, it’s definitely her, which means at this point, it’s almost fun to guess which one of them will have that last laugh.

Tiny chairs and new assassins

Things weren’t looking up for Villanelle this week either. After nearly botching her kill assignment last week, she faced the music with Hélène (Camille Cottin) and her tiny chairs in that medieval ballroom. In a surprising twist, Hélène actually turned to kindness to try and get V to spill the beans on what’s been going on, giving her more matronly love than she’s probably had in her entire life. Could anyone blame her for tearing up at the touch? But make no mistake, the boss lady’s actions were definitely a ruse to get her killer to open up. She made that much clear when V refused to bite, pointing out that her new female assassin Rhian (Alexandra Roach) could easily take her place. Actually, it looks like she already has when you consider what happened to poor Mo (Raj Bajaj). That guy’s sole mission in life seemed to be pleasing Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) and eating good omelettes, two things that came to an abrupt end thanks to Rhian. The fact that he was a casualty after gathering evidence that proved Paul (Steve Pemberton) is a double agent was just sad because he had so much more story to tell. On the bright side, it led to a very rare and well-earned release by Carolyn when she trashed her living room. Apparently some people would rather throw vases and smash things than be hugged by their daughters, which all seems very on-brand for that character.

E and V, together … but not quite

With so much happening on The Twelve side this week that left Eve (Sandra Oh) on the sidelines as she worked with Bear (Turlough Convery) to track down Villanelle. At this point it’s hard to tell whether Eve just needs to be around the killer, is looking for answers, or actually has a messiah complex like Carolyn believes. What fans do know is that she’s definitely not mourning what happened to her husband. And if she does catch up with Villanelle it’s anyone’s guess what she’ll do this time around.
Eve came close to catching up with her in “Beautiful Monster” though, that’s for sure. She narrowly missed a tartan-wearing Villanelle at the golf course and again at the train station. That wave she gave the train was so sad and loaded… it’s almost like Eve wants to be around the killer because she can do all the things that Eve wants to do deep down. The fact that she stabbed V back in season one, has had plenty of kinky bedroom scenes to encourage that darkness, and even the way she stepped on Dasha trying to finish the job Villanelle started in this episode? That all points to Eve being a killer herself. How interesting would it be if the end goal here was for Eve to become the killer and Villanelle to become the one incapable of pulling the trigger? That certainly seems to be the way the show is heading right now.Regardless, at this point only one thing is for sure: thanks to V’s phone call to Eve at the end of the episode, it’s only a matter of time before those two reconnect in person. And considering next week is the finale, it’s bound to happen sooner rather than later.Killing Eve airs Sundays at 10 pET on CTV Drama Channel.[video_embed id='1959947']RELATED: Sandra, Maitreyi and Simu are all paying it forward for Asian and South Asian Heritage Month[/video_embed]
