Very few births go exactly as planned but Darlene and Shane Wall had a particularly rough go of it last week when they found themselves stranded on the side of the road with a totaled car and a baby making his way into the world.
Darlene woke around 4:30 a.m. with contractions and quickly got her husband out of bed to go to the hospital. Baby Gunner was already 12 days overdue so time was of the essence. While the couple was driving down the still-dark highway, a deer darted into the road so quickly Shane couldn’t swerve avoid it. The car took quite a hit, but mom, dad and baby were all fine. They drove for a little while longer but after a few minutes it was clear the car wasn’t going to make it.
Shane then began trying to flag down any car he could for help getting to the hospital. Understandably, the couple wasn’t too keen on giving birth to their son at the side of the road. It only took two attempts before the couple found someone willing to take them to the hospital.
“You almost feel bad for the guy because he can’t really say no,” Wall told CTV News (in the video above). But in true Canadian fashion, the man’s response was, ‘sure, hop in, here we go’ and he got the Walls to the hospital just in time for Baby Gunner to enter the world.
“Probably should have gone with Hunter,” Wall says in regards to the baby’s name, “because he’s a natural born hunter at this point.”
The whole ordeal sounds terrifying, but hey, at least the couple has a great story to tell at dinner parties. That’s sure to top pretty much everything.
