Nobody has a flawless face, and that’s something we’re getting better at admitting every day. But maybe you have a hot night on the town coming up and you want to do something a little special that changes the way you look, and that red lipstick just isn’t cutting it anymore. Perhaps your eye-area appears more sunken-in than you would like, or your cheekbones aren’t popping high enough. Well, don’t jump into plastic surgery, just give your face a good contouring.
What’s contouring? It’s a technique that gives structure and shape to an area of the face by using makeup to highlight and define what your mama already gave you. Ever see Kim Kardashian’s face up close? Of course you have. That’s contouring. Angelina Jolie? Yep, it’s her secret weapon, too. And while it may take a few attempts to get it just right, once you do, the results will blow you away.
One of Kim’s makeup artists recently offered some words of wisdom about contouring, which he says isn’t really meant as an “everyday” look. First, he says to make sure you apply with brushes and not your hands. You won’t get the coverage you want and it will be next to impossible to blend seamlessly with just your fingertips. But he also lays out the process quite simply, too:
“The contour would be a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone. The highlight shade would be a shade or two light [not an actual highlighter or luminizer] so you’re creating that depth in the space,” he tells The Cut. “Then it’s the art of the blending it together so it graduates – or has an ombre effect, where it goes from light to dark but looks seamless. It should look really smooth and blended, not like there are chunks of lines everywhere.”
