Do you consider yourself an adventurous eater? If so, boy, do we have something in store for you.
Toronto’s Summerhill Market is now serving up a host of edible bugs. Yes, bugs, as in the same creepy, crawly things you run away from when they manage to sneak into your home. You now have the opportunity to put them into your mouth and chew.
Which is just what no one asked for ever.
On the menu are roasted crickets, chocolate-covered crickets, mealworm protein balls and even “grasshopper pie”, which features ground-up insects mixed directly into the flour! They come in snack packs, or if you’re extra hungry, bags big enough to make a meal out of.
Now for the million dollar question: taste.
According to the folks in the video above, crickets taste almost like a “roasted peanut” while mealworms have more of a complex flavour, resembling toast “with a hint of mushroom”.
It’s also worth noting that however grossed out you might be, insects are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world. They are also nutritious (very high in protein), and environmentally sustainable to farm. Plus, you probably eat them already without knowing, as bug fragments can seep into things like chocolate, food colouring and even cinnamon. So if you can get over that cultural “ick” factor, chocolate-covered bugs might become your new favourite treat!
We mean, it’s possible, right?
