Model Adriana Lima took to Instagram to make an important announcement – she’ll no longer be taking off her clothes for an empty cause.
Lima, who’s known as one of the most high-profile Victoria’s Secret ‘Angels,’ and has walked over 20 shows for their renowned annual fashion show, shared a post speaking openly about the pressures faced by women all over the world, to conform to certain body images and stereotypes. And she quite openly declared her intention to help bring about change.
She said the change of heart began after a friend approached her, saying she was dissatisfied with her body image, sparking Lima to think about how widely this is felt, and about the role of her own work in perpetuating such negative and pressuring body images. After being asked to feature in a sexy photoshoot to go on social media, she took the time to pause and think about what this would really mean.
💜I had received a call for the possibility of filming a sexy video of me to be posted and shared in social media. Even though I have done many of this type, something had changed in me, when a friend approached me to share that she was unhappy with her body, then it made me think…. that everyday in my life, I wake up thinking, how do I look? Was I going to be accepted in my job? And in that moment I realized that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit in a stereotype that society/socialmedia/fashion etc imposed…. i thought that’s not a way of living and beyond that…. that’s not physically and mentally healthy, so I decided to make that change….. I will not take of my clothes anymore for a empty cause…..💜✨ #Embraceyouself #natureisbeautiful #naturalissexy #LOVEYOU 💜✨
“It made me think…. that everyday in my life, I wake up thinking, how do I look? Was I going to be accepted in my job? And in that moment I realized that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit in a stereotype that society/social media/fashion etc imposed.” It sounds like it made her think not only about how her professional life was impacting other women, but also how it affected her own body image, and it was not for the better.
She went on, “I thought that’s not a way of living and beyond that… that’s not physically and mentally healthy, so I decided to make that change… I will not take off my clothes anymore for an empty cause,” signalling her move from intention, to action. She ended the post with the telling hashtags “#Embraceyouself #natureisbeautiful#naturalissexy.”
While she didn’t mention it by name, some of the more eagle-eyed among Insta users noted she unfollowed many fellow Victoria’s Secret Angels, as well as the brand’s senior creative. It sounds like she may be more mindful in the future of who she works with, and the more wide-reaching impact of what she puts out into the world. And we applaud her – anything that helps women feel a little less bad about themselves, and a little more empowered, is a step in the right direction.
