Kiesza’s breakthrough artist of the year win may have been the biggest award of the night, but the name on everyone’s lips this morning was Alanis Morissette. The 40-year-old Ottawa-native shocked the audience when she paraded on stage looking just as fresh and youthful as she did 20 years ago for the release of Jagged Little Pill. Don’t believe it? Neither did we, but a quick Wikipedia search confirmed that the singer-songwriter turned 40 this past summer.
So, what’s the secret to looking amazing at 40? We spoke to Toronto-based makeup artist Stephanie Daga of BlushPretty to get the scoop on what Alanis is doing so right.
Let’s start with her skin. How amazing does it look? Though one would argue her smile hides any possible flaws, we are totally impressed with her complexion, which is smooth and clear without any of the tightness or lack of expression that comes with plastic surgery, injections or fillers. Daga agrees and explains that Morissette likely makes skincare a priority with regular facials, good moisturizers and, most importantly, sun protection. “Alanis is doing it right,” Daga explains. “She is embracing her age and isn’t trying to be something she is not.”
If you want to get a glowing look like Alanis’, make sure you’re hydrating your skin. Daga also suggests eating well with a nutrient-rich diet, because you are what you eat!
Makeup can be a really powerful tool for looking younger but use it wrong and you’ll actually end up aging yourself. Daga explains that a lot of older women fall into the trap of using makeup as a mask to hide signs of aging. “I love that Alanis has kept her skin soft, smooth and dewy,” says Daga. “She doesn’t look over-powdered or cakey, which always results in highlighting any fine lines and flaws instead of hiding them”
Focus on one feature.
Morissette opted to put the focus on one feature: her eyes. “She kept it rock star and simple with a smoky eye, leaving her cheeks a soft natural shade of peach and her lips the perfect glossy nude in order to complement and not compete,” explains Daga. If a bold lip is more your thing, make sure to go light on the eyes and face.
Overall, the secret to looking great at any age is to take care of your skin. It’s clear from Sunday night’s appearance that Alanis has been diligent about applying sunscreen and making sure to moisturize her skin properly. Daga also suggests changing up your skincare products as your skin changes with age, trying to keep your routine simple so that you will actually stick to it. “Moisturizing and hydration is key to keep the complexion looking its optimal best, so find the right skincare regimen that works for you and stick to it,” says Daga. If it means looking like Alanis by the time we’re 40, where do we sign up?
