Canadians are finally getting the respect we deserve for the country’s groundbreaking rap scene, but one person we didn’t expect to help bring the hip hop focus to the true north was Alex Trebek.
The Canadian host of Jeopardy has been quizzing the best and brightest for decades, but Trebek took a break from questions about quantum physics and Shakespeare to spit some serious fire on a recent episode that featured the category “Lets Rap, Kids!” So close to being cool. So. Close.
The host dropped the beat and delivered five lines from famous hip hop songs, including Kendrick Lamar’s M.A.A.D. City, Lil Wayne’s 6 foot 7 foot and Kanye West’s Famous. Trebek’s best delivery was for his fellow Canadian entertainer Drake, with Trebek doing the 6ix God proud with his delivery of Started From The Bottom.
Trebek ended the category, which appeared during an episode from the College Championship, with the clearest rendition we’ve ever heard of Desiigner’s Panda. So that’s what he’s saying!
Too bad for the game show host, the category ended after one round. “I was just getting into this rap thing,” said Trebek. “I’m not too good at it, but I was just getting into it.” You go, Treezy.
