Alicia Keys has temporarily put her no-makeup policy on hold for the latest issue of Allure magazine. In the chic editorial spread, Keys stuns in separate teal, bold black and orchid-hued cat eye looks while sporting Spring outfits from designers Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, Max Mara and DKNY.
When the Grammy-winning singer proclaimed that she’d be going au naturel in May’s Lenny Letter, she faced (no pun intended) a number of critics who chastised her decision. They protested that not everyone is blessed with flawless skin and that Keys was making an outlandishly radical statement.
Meanwhile, that wasn’t the case at all. “I started at 20 years old in this ridiculously invasive world in which everyone covered me in makeup and then threw me under tons of lights, so I’d sweat for two or three hours,” the former acne sufferer tells Allure writer David Denicolo. “It took me so long to finally say, ‘Whoa! Who am I under there?’ That is just my own personal quest.”
The Voice judge goes on to say, “I’m not a slave to makeup. I’m not a slave to not wearing makeup either. I think makeup can be self-expression. I have no intention to shame anyone at all. No one should be ashamed by the way you choose to express yourself. And that’s exactly the point. However, if you want to do that for yourself, you should do that.”
Industry insiders are now curious to see if the “In Common” chanteuse will be wearing any makeup at the upcoming Grammy and Academy Awards (if her single from “Queen of Katwe” is nominated). Regardless, sans cosmetics or with a swipe of eyeliner, Keys will always be our #WomanCrushWednesday.
