While we know we shouldn’t be so invested in a TV show, after watching The Amazing Race Canada (Tuesdays, 9 p.m. ET, CTV) for the past couple of months we obviously have some favourite teams that we can’t help but root for. (Just don’t tell our other children.)
Like Anthony and James, the married couple with so much heart, spunk and all-around love that even people who saw the race when it filmed a few months ago couldn’t help but ask for selfies with them on-set. (We know, we saw it first-hand when we were on location in Kitchener-Waterloo.) And we can totally see why—these guys are star quality.
So when James stumbled in Charlevoix, Que. on Tuesday night during the recreation of a G7 summit speech—which had to be delivered in French and English—we were very, very worried that this would be the leg that sent them home. Sure enough, the guys never recovered from the tongue-twisting memory challenge and wound up on the mat in last place, right behind Sam and Sarah. (Aarthy and Thinesh, meanwhile, secured yet another first-place finish and a trip to Chile.) The good news? The leg was a keep-on-racing leg, which meant that the married couple from Edmonton is safe . . . for now.
Next week, the show heads to Toronto and then Thunder Bay, Ont., where we know the remaining teams will have their skills and relationships put to the test once again and, with a spot in the final four on the line, how could they not? Here’s how we see the five remaining teams stacking up on their way to the finish line.
Anthony and James
Their chances: These guys have shown they definitely know how to communicate when things get rough, which is a big part of doing well on the show. Unfortunately we’ve seen them fall under pressure before, so in order for them to win they’ll have to dig deep and stay calm.

Eyeing the finish line: One of this year’s easy fan-favourites, many Canadians would love to see these guys win.
Sam and Sarah
Their chances: We really dig how these Olympians know how to lead when necessary, but they also aren’t afraid to stop and ask for help. They’ve shown their grit through plenty of scary situations (hello ice diving!) but have managed to stay positive and supportive throughout. So what might be their downfall? Let’s just say they’ve been a bit directionally challenged in the past…
Eyeing the finish line: If anyone knows how to stay cool under pressure it’s these sprinters, who have boosted up many of the other teams along the way. We love everything they stand for, and think they’d make great Amazing Race Canada champs.
Dave and Irina
Their chances: There’s no question that this married couple is playing their own game, and they’re okay with it. They’ve got the strength (Dave) and smarts (Irina), which has carried them this far. As we’ve seen though, Irina hates doing anything physical and tends to buckle under pressure, so they’ll have to really figure out those issues heading into the final stretch.

Eyeing the finish line: In seven years of the series, we’ve never seen fans react so strongly to contestants. Dave and Irina have been accused of cheating and even of setting back women’s rights. Add in the fact that they refused to do some of the challenges and took time penalties instead—let’s just say they’re not winning congeniality awards anytime soon.
Lauren and Joanne
Their chances: These Saskatchewan sisters are widely touted as this year’s underdogs (Prairie dogs?), but as we’ve seen with underdogs in the past, they have a penchant for coming back for the win. While neither of them have an abundance of physical strength they’ve managed to hold their own in challenges, and they’ve been really great about talking each other off the ledge when need be, too.
Eyeing the finish line: It’s hard to stand out next to so many other big personalities, so we’ll admit there have been times we forgot these sisters are still on the race. Still, when they have been on screen they’ve impressed us with their perseverance, which would make them fun surprise winners, don’t you think?
Aarthy and Thinesh
Their chances: This duo has definitely shown they’re top contenders—not only have they snagged several first-place finishes this season but they also won an early Express Pass and refused to use it. The last time that happened was in season four, when Steph and Kristen handed over their Express Pass after it expired and they went on to win the whole thing.

Eyeing the finish line: We love that these two are a real couple. They fight and then make up, and are aware of their differences and what makes them stronger as a team. They also fight for what they believe in; Thinesh and Aarthy refused to ditch Anthony and James at that clam-digging challenge, and that makes already makes them winners in our eyes.
Only a couple of weeks left to go until we find out who wins for sure.
