As far as bad breaks go, mother-daughter duo Frankie and Amy Gassler had a few of them in The Amazing Race Canada‘s second-last episode on Tuesday night. Despite pulling through a sticky taffy-stretching Detour and digging their way out from behind after a brutal golf Face Off, the team was still the last to arrive on the mat.

Being eliminated just one episode before the last leg has got to be tough, but it’s even tougher knowing that another player jeopardized your shot at a one-in-three finale. That’s what seemed to have happened to Frankie and Amy after Ashley lied to them and said everyone had memorized the Latin and English during the final Road Block.

Unfortunately the extra time it took the duo to memorize both names of the flowers was enough to set them behind, and in the end it was Jillian and Emmett who landed that final spot in the finale. We caught up with Frankie and Amy to find out their feelings about Ashley’s shady move, what they would say if they could confront her, and being this season’s underdogs.

In your own words, what went wrong?

Frankie: It was a snowball effect; there were a few things that went wrong but probably just trusting in the relationship we had with Joel and Ashley and them sabotaging us. That definitely went wrong. I didn’t read my clue properly — I read it a thousand and one times, it said “must include the English language” which threw me off. We heard Jillian speaking Latin so we went Latin. It was my fault as well as being sabotaged, so it is what it is.

Amy how long did it actually take you to complete that Road Block?

Amy: Once Jillian and Emmett left, it was only about 10 minutes.

Frankie: We thought that Joel and Ashley had made the mistake and didn’t do it in both languages. We thought there was no way they would do that to us so when we found out so much later we were actually shocked.

Have you talked to Ashley since?

Amy: Nope. No. She wouldn’t even really look at us at the wrap party so she knows what she did.

Frankie: Yep.

So 10 minutes – if she had told Jillian and Emmett that as well you guys would probably be in the final three instead of them.

Frankie: Oh, for sure. Amy knew both languages up and down. We thought they were doing it in English so we had the inside scoop. We were convinced it was both languages — if we knew it was just English we probably would have come in first. Amy is a smarty pants.

If you did have the opportunity to speak with Ashley would you? What would you say?

Frankie: Oh we’re going to have the opportunity next week during the live after show. I’m sure there will be time there. Who knows what will be said.

How has doing this race changed your own relationship?

Amy: I don’t think it’s changed at all, we’ve been together our whole lives and know each other inside and out. It was an amazing bonding experience.

What was your proudest moment?

Amy: I was proud of the whole thing to be honest with you. We definitely were counted out in the beginning and I think we proved ourselves as a little bit of tougher competition.

Why do you think everyone saw you as underdogs?

Amy: People see our coloured hair and that we like to wear makeup and have fun. Sometimes those types of people aren’t really competitive, but when it comes down to it, we’re competitive, and I think we really wanted this money and needed it more than most people. So that really gave us the push and drive to dig deep when you needed to.

Other than listen to Ashley, was there anything you wish you could take back?

Amy: I would have gone to the art challenge before the welding!

Frankie: Totally.

What’s Jon Montgomery like when the cameras are off?

Frankie: He’s funny! He is a gem.

Amy: He’s hilarious!

Any advice for the other teams going forward?

Amy: Go big or go home! We’re really rooting for our girls, Steph and Kristen, but it’s anybody’s game. It will be a tight race.

Anything to add or any projects you’re working on?

Amy: Hopefully Amazing Race Canada Fan Favourites! But I’m still working at the barber shop I’ve been working at — I just got promoted to manager. And mom is a new grandma. Not me, obviously! But yeah, we have a new little baby in the house, my sister just had her son. My sister is going back to school so yeah – just focusing on family and work!

The Amazing Race finale airs Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. on CTV.
