To say that Comedy Network star Amy Schumer has never been one to shy away from sensitive subject matter would be an understatement. She’s ruthless! The comedian seems to take great pride in raising eyebrows, dropping jaws and inducing tight-collar-pulling, all in the name of a good dark joke. And last night on Inside Amy Schumer, she decided to take aim at the Bill Cosby sex scandal in her signature fashion.
Although no one knows exactly what fate Bill Cosby will meet over the several highly publicized accusations of drugging, rape and sexual assault against him, Schumer decided to take the first crack at how a potential trial might unfold.
In an attempt to spoof Cosby’s supporters who have seemed indifferent to the accusations in favour of maintaining a nostalgic image of the 77 year old former Cliff Huxtable, Schumer presented a sketch called ‘Court of Opinion: The Trial of Bill Cosby.’
In the bit, Schumer appears as Cosby’s defence lawyer, who’s only arguments for the judge and jury are based on Cosby nostalgia, old show clips, yelling, and giving away free tacky sweaters and puddin’ pops.
Schumer drops lines of flawed logic like, “If convicted, the next time you put on a rerun of The Cosby Show, you might wince a little,” and “We deserve to dance like no one’s watching, and watch like no one’s raping.” Yowza.
The sketch also ends with Amy’s true opinion of Cosby, when a special delivery from “The Cos” is brought to her in court. You’ve gotta watch it. Prepare to grab your collar!
