You’ve got to be pretty special to throw out the honourary first pitch at a Major League Baseball game. Sure, there are almost 3,000 games played in a season, but when you consider that most stadiums house over 50,000 fans and there are thousands more at home, your chances of getting recognized look a little slimmer. Despite those odds, one extra special baseball fan is planning on throwing out the first pitch at every single one of the 30 MLB parks this year and she’s only eight years old.

Hailey Dawson threw out her 25th first pitch Tuesday night at the Rogers Center ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays’ game against the Boston Red Sox (unfortunately the home team would go on to lose 10-7). Hailey was born with Poland Syndrome — a birth defect characterized by underdevelopment of chest muscles and hand disfigurement on one side of the body — and she uses a 3D printed prosthetic right hand to pitch.

Hailey was gifted the prosthetic by the University of Las Vegas Nevada in 2015 and was asked at the time to use it to throw out the first pitch at a Baltimore Orioles game. After the Washington Nationals made the same proposal, Hailey’s mom told CTV News that she asked her daughter if she wanted to try throwing an honourary first pitch in all 30 Major League parks and Hailey agreed. They decided to use the goal and platform to bring awareness to Poland Syndrome and let people know that 3D printed hands are available and functional for people living with it.

Traditional prosthetics can cost upwards of $20,000 and, in Hailey’s case, would need to be replaced every six months or so as she grows. The 3D printed option is much cheaper and still allows her the mobility and dexterity to grasp and throw properly.

Hailey is also able to deck out her hand in the colours and logo of each team she visits and then have the players autograph it. She says that her favourite game so far is “all of them.”

With just five teams left to visit — the Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels — the Las Vegas native could solidify her Guinness World Record for throwing the honourary first pitch in every MLB stadium by the end of this season.
