An ‘iCarly’ revival is in the works with the original cast

Everything that’s old continues to be new again as people everywhere seek comfort viewing in the year that has been 2020. Case in point? iCarly is the latest TV series to earn itself a revival, and the good news for fans is that most of the original cast is coming back too.

Paramount Plus, one of the many new streaming services that has popped up south of the border (it launches in early 2021) announced it is bringing the Nickelodeon series back for a new season, possibly more. Miranda Cosgrove (Carly), Jerry Trainor (Spencer) and Nathan Kress (Freddie) have all agreed to reprise their original roles, although what they’ve been up to for the past eight years is anyone’s guess. Well, not exactly—the new version is being developed by Jay Kogen (The Simpsons, Frasier) and Ali Schouten (Merry Happy Whatever), so they probably have some idea.

The original series, which was created by Dan Schneider, ran for six seasons and 97 episodes when it aired from 2007-12. It followed a group of besties who created a webcast while facing the typical problems that kids their aged faced, and its relatable stories and fun premise was so popular that it broke ratings records for Nickelodeon at the time. It also notably led to the Sam & Cat spinoff (also created by Schneider), which starred Jennette McCurdy as iCarly’s Sam Puckett and Ariana Grande as Cat Valentine from the show Victorious. At time of press neither McCurdy nor Noah Munck (who starred in iCarly as Gibby) had been confirmed to return.

In the series’ final episode Carly decided to move with her dad to Italy, and so the gang recorded one final broadcast of the show before she left. Oh, and Carly and Freddie totally smooched before she boarded that plane. So where did the friends go from there? Did Carly stay in Italy for long? Did she stay in touch with her former crew? So many questions, and now fans will finally get some answers when the show eventually debuts, either in 2021 or early 2022.

For those who keep track of such things in the industry, putting the new iCarly on a streaming service rather than bringing it back to Nick makes sense, because at this point everyone is investing big bucks into what’s been dubbed the “Streaming Wars.” When it launches, Paramount Plus will technically be a rebranded version of CBS All Access, but with more titles from other properties like MTV, Comedy Central and BET. It also plans on continuing originals like Picard and The Good Fight, and will be the home to the upcoming Armie Hammer-led, inside-look at The Godfather drama series.

CBS All Access is currently available in Canada with limited content that hasn’t been sold to other broadcasters. It’s been confirmed that Paramount Plus will also launch in Canada, but because of pre-existing and continuing licensing deals not all content will be available to view. Fingers crossed iCarly will be available in Canada too.
