From first kisses to the White House, nothing is off limits in Michelle Obama’s new powerful memoir Becoming, our next Social Chapter pick!
The memoir provides an intimate look into the personal life of one of the most famous and respected First Ladies in the history of the United States. Obama starts with tales of her childhood growing up on the South Side of Chicago as Michelle Robinson, learning to play piano and falling in love for the first time. She tackles the fear and frustration she’s faced when dealing with discrimination and imposter syndrome at the side of America’s first African American President, and leans into the balance between strength and weakness. She is as humble as she is fierce.
In short, she is inspiring. But don’t take our word alone on it: The Guardian’s Peter Conrad says “The former first lady’s wit and warmth shine through in an extraordinarily candid account of her life inside and outside the White House.”
Kuba Shand-Baptiste of the Independent gave it four out of five stars, writing “I found myself lifting my jaw from my chest at the end of every other chapter—this was not the Obama I thought I knew. She was more.”
Obama’s memoir has already smashed the record for most single-day sales for any book published in 2018 by Penguin Random House, selling more than 725,000 copies in Canada and the United States.
We’ll be discussing all things Becoming the week of Dec. 17—and FYI, the holiday season is all about appreciating what you have, while making time for ones you love; two impactful themes celebrated throughout this novel—so make sure to join in on the conversation!
