Angelina Jolie’s eldest son, Maddox, is ready to start his first year of college. The 18-year-old and his mom were in South Korea this week to get Maddox situated at his new school, Yonsei University, just outside Seoul, and Angie was trying not to get too emotional.
A video of Maddox, who is set to study biochemistry, and his mom was posted on Instagram by user xx_efu, and Jolie seemed more than happy to answer questions from curious fans. Maddox, on the other hand, hung back and looked a little uncomfortable, but he’s probably used to that and, hey, at least Angelina didn’t embarrass him. Well, not too much. When asked how long she was planning to stay in the country, Jolie replied, “I leave today, today’s the day I drop him off,” much to the audible disappointment of the unseen crowd around her. Angie added, “I’m trying not to cry,” as she gestured towards Maddox, who looked like he wanted to be anywhere but that hallway in that moment.
Jolie added that Yonsei “seems like a great school” and told the students around her that she’s “sure you’re all going to like it.” But that’s when things got better. Angie posed for a pic, even suggesting it might be easier if they all get together in one group photo, and the gasps of excitement you can hear in the background are kind of adorable. One Yonsei student, Jo Won Bang, told Us Weekly how “nice” Angelina was about the whole thing. “After looking through the dorms, she came to us and greeted all of us. And I was lucky enough to shake hands with her! She came toward us and had small conversations with us, and we took lots of pictures together. She really wasn’t hesitant in taking pictures with us, and I could see how much she cared for Maddox and his upcoming college life. It was a very special experience.”

While Angelina dropped off her son, and is expected to visit him as often as she can, Maddox’s relationship with dad Brad Pitt isn’t as close. Things between the two men have been tense ever since the altercation on their private plane, which was the catalyst of Angie and Brad’s breakup.
A family friend told Us Weekly that while Maddox is “very close with Angie,” he “doesn’t really see himself as Brad’s son.” In fact, Pitt only learned of Maddox’s college plans right before the news was reported by the media earlier this month.
Jolie and Pitt are also parents to Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne. They reportedly spent the summer with both parents, going back and forth between Los Angeles, where Brad is, and New Mexico, where Angie was shooting a movie.
For now, they’re not empty nesters just yet. One down, five to go. Good luck to Maddox! And, equally importantly, Angie. She’s going to need it.
