Your body goes through a bunch of weird changes when you’re pregnant. Hormonal imbalances. Fatigue. Swelling where you never thought swelling was possible. And of course, remembering simple words or sentences can sometimes be the biggest task ever thanks to that little phenomenon known as pregnancy brain.
Anne Hathaway is certainly feeling that last item, which she revealed over the weekend at the summer Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in Los Angeles. Hathaway was there promoting her upcoming anthology series Modern Love on Amazon Prime, just days after announcing she’s pregnant with her second babe.
Naturally it didn’t take reporters attending the press conference very long to ask how the mom-to-be was feeling the second time around. “How do you think?” she responded coyly. Later in a smaller interview session, Hathaway expanded her answer when asked whether her younger self ever thought she’d be doing superhero movies instead of rom-coms.
“My brain won’t let me go there right now. I’m sorry,” Hathaway laughed. “Somebody’s eating it.”
Jokes aside, when someone else followed up as to whether Hathaway really was having a hard time focusing given the life growing inside her and all, she admitted that mommy brain does sometimes get the best of her right now.
“I genuinely am. Not in every aspect of my life. I can focus on certain things that are fine, but there are certain things my brain refuses to allow me to imagine… directions,” she added. “So if you describe something, shapes, or you spell something, I can’t go there. And certain words I have a tough time recalling, so I become that spinning wheel of death on your computer in conversations with me. I feel I’m very taxing for people to be around.”
TBH we found her delightful and the epitome of that “pregnancy glow” you always hear about, but we get it. It’s hard to always feel 100 per cent when you’re busy creating life and also trying to answer a billion questions from curious reporters while also already being a mom to a three-year-old boy. It seems… extra.
And let’s not forget Hathaway is still working. She stars in one episode of Modern Love, which is an episodic anthology series based on the New York Times column of the same name. Her character struggles with bipolar disorder, which was a whole other challenge for the actress.
“Terri Cheney, who’s written a book called Maniac, is very open about her journey with bipolar disorder. And I spoke with her on the phone at great length. She was invaluable,” Hathaway said. “She really illustrated how weighted down she would feel during a depressive episode; how objects become almost impossible to lift; how everything that was, hours before so easy and magical just becomes impossible and hopeless, and that was really illustrative to me. If I haven’t mentioned it, excuse me. I’m pregnant and I don’t remember what I say from minute to minute — and so she wrote a book called Maniac, and I read that and I drew a lot of source — my backstory from that.”
See? The (mommy brain) struggle is real.
