Annie Murphy got caught wandering around the actual Schitt's Creek during the pandemic

Scoring the best butter tart around may have been the catalyst.

When the COVID-19 global pandemic forced us into quarantine back in March, the stay-at-home orders were hard for some to process at first and, for many Canadians, the only respite from the boredom of lockdown was going for a nice weekend drive. Perhaps to, oh we don’t know, Goodwood, Ontario where the Emmy-nominated Canadian juggernaut Schitt’s Creek is filmed? It’s a picturesque, fairytale kind of town—who wouldn’t want to visit for a butter tart and a stroll? Turns out one of the Emmy-nominated stars of Schitt’s Creek, Annie Murphy, couldn’t resist a trip to Goodwood either, and it almost landed her in hot water.“It is not my finest moment, I would say,” she laughed over video-chat with Seth Meyers during an appearance on Late Night. “I was getting a little stir-crazy and nostalgic, and I was like, ‘I’m gonna take a little drive! I’m gonna go to Goodwood!’”
After explaining to Seth that the best butter tarts in the world come from a local bakery called Annina’s Bakeshop (and also explaining to a bemused Seth what a butter tart is), she says she was walking and eating along the Goodwood streets when she realized just how exposed she might be.“I was strolling around the streets of Goodwood, and this car of ladies pulls up to me and they’re like, ‘Alexis? What are you doing here?!’ Because Goodwood I guess has become a bit of a hot spot for tourists now. They have driven three hours to come and take pictures in Goodwood, and there I was just wandering the streets like a maniac!” she said.It was three days later, Annie says, when the CBC, Schitt’s Creek, and her co-star Dan Levy all sent out the message via social media, asking people to stop visiting Goodwood because of the health risk it posed to locals that she really felt like a doofus. TL;DR: don't go traveling around to other towns during a pandemic, even if they are locations of award-winning Canadian comedies. Since the sixth and final season of Schitt’s Creek aired earlier this year, Annie was nominated for a Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The show garnered another 14 nominations too, including nods for Annie's costars Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Catherine O’Hara.“It’s been so wild because when we started out, it was really just this little show on the CBC in Canada,” she mused, “And we shot in Toronto, and then we’d go up north 45 minutes and shoot in this little town called Goodwood, Ontario. So yeah, it felt really small and insular, and so to have it be where it is now is pretty wonderful.”[video_embed id='1786373']RELATED: Eugene Levy shouts out the OG ‘Schitt’s Creek’ fans for the Emmy noms [/video_embed]When Seth pointed out that she got to work with not only comedy royalty, but Canadian royalty, Annie launched into a classic Canadian-fish-out-of-water story. Early in the show's run, she and the cast were in New York City doing press and staying at the posh Waldorf Astoria hotel. After recording an interview for Late Night with Seth Meyers earlier in the day, Eugene and Dan invited Annie to come to their room to watch it with them, and that's when Murphy was hit with the shock of her life.“So I went up to the room and knocked on the door, and Martin Short dressed in a tuxedo opens the door with a tray of champagne and goes, ‘Annie Murphy!’ And I was like, ‘wha-wha-wha-what?!’ And so I proceeded to go into Martin Short’s hotel room at the Waldorf and watch my friends Eugene and Dan Levy on Seth Meyers! […] I think it’s like a flash before my eyes while I’m dying moment.”[video_embed id='2012759']BEFORE YOU GO: Eugene Levy tears up during surprise Lifetime Achievement tribute from family & friends [/video_embed]
