I’ve tried to take up knitting multiple times. And multiple times, I’ve been left with a tiny squares of fabric attached to small knitting needles, stashed in drawers and closets never to be seen again. But this time is different. Even as I type, I’m thinking of how relaxing it would be to curl up in front of the TV and finish off my Downtown Snood from We are Knitters.

What is the difference, you ask, between my first clumsy attempts versus this time around (where I am already planning my next project and which wools I will be purchasing)? Quickness and ease. I started out with very small needles and thin wool, taking hours to make the equivalent of a Barbie sized bath mat. We are Knitters kits for beginners, on the other hand, come with big 15 mm needles and chunky, thick wool that make the fruits of your labour visible so much faster. Easy to read patterns, along with online video tutorials you can refer to, make knitting a breeze.

So how does it all work exactly? You pick the pattern, the wool colours and We are Knitters will do the rest. They’ll send you everything you need to complete the project from start to finish — all in a recyclable bag.

Admittedly, getting the hang of learning the basic stitches takes a bit of patience (and rewinding and replaying — wait, where does the yarn go again??), but after you get the technique down, it’s game over. Stitch repetition has an almost meditative quality and there’s something so satisfying about watching your knit get bigger and bigger. Plus, having knitting needles in your hands instead of a smartphone might just be the screen detox your life needed. Talk about soothing.

And designs? Oh, let me tell you about designs. I mean, look at Krysten Ritter in this confetti scarf.
