If you’ve got a gazillion dollars, own an island, grew up in the spotlight and have been named one of the hottest dudes on the planet more than once, you’re bound to stop trying after a while. But that doesn’t really make the things we’ve been hearing about Johnny Depp lately any less disappointing.
The actor has been in the news a lot as of late, between his very public divorce from Amber Heard and now this lawsuit involving his former business management team. And a lot of ugly accusations are coming out.
One of them is the allegation that Depp has become so lazy in his roles these days (“entitled,” his former managers call it), that he doesn’t even bother to learn his lines. Instead he pays some lackey six figures to feed him those lines through an earpiece.
On the one hand, we understand that lines can be hard to memorize. We definitely couldn’t do it. On the other hand, isn’t that part of what he gets paid all of that money to do? If the rumours are true, and he does indeed have someone reading to him, we have to say that’s pretty disappointing. Depp has always given off the impression that he immerses himself completely in these roles; that’s why he was once so great.
And you can’t deny that he was great. Remember the days of Edward Scissorhands, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco and Blow? We’ve held onto those roles of his through some dark times, like The Tourist, Mortdecai and Dark Shadows.
To be fair we don’t know for sure if Depp actually does have his lines fed to him or not — actress Kirsten Dunst once revealed that the actor uses an earpiece to listen to music — but that’s just one of several disappointing things that are being said about the man these days.
In terms of this particular lawsuit, it’s getting kind of nasty. The managers are seeking $560,000 in unpaid fees, while Depp himself is suing them for more than $25 million in damages, after the firm reportedly made bad investments on his behalf and failed to pay taxes and loans on time.
So what does he have to say about some of these claims of his spending being out of control?
“Why didn’t they drop me as a client if I was so out of control?” Depp told the Wall Street Journal. “It’s my money. If I want to buy 15,000 cotton balls a day, it’s my thing.”
Fair enough, we suppose. Either way the next time we settle in for a Depp-starring flick, we know we’re going to be completely obsessed with his ears… aren’t you?
