Ariana Grande has once again released some of the best pop music of the year. Continuing to circumvent the traditional record cycle and release new music as soon as she’s ready, Grande’s latest track “Boyfriend” may be part of yet another new album or a one-off single. What we know for sure is that when Ariana drops a new song, we’re making room on our playlist.
Releasing “Boyfriend” at midnight on Friday, Grande teamed up with pop duo Social House, aka Mike Foster and Charles Anderson. In the video for the new track, Grande is a jealous lover who imagines attacking every girl that Foster speaks to at a house party. The tables eventually turn and Foster has his own daydream of ripping out the heart of a man flirting with Grande. Anderson plays the pair’s couples therapist who should probably book them an extra session. The new video features a bow and arrow, tons of hair flips, a demolition make-out session, a sleek plaid suit and some blue eyeshadow that we are seriously loving.
Grande and Social House teamed up with frequent collaborator Hannah Lux Davis for “Boyfriend.” Davis has previously directed Ariana’s videos for “Thank U, Next,” “7 Rings,” “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” “Side To Side,” “Into You,” “Bang Bang,” “Focus” and “Love Me Harder.”
“Boyfriend” marks Social Houses’ third time working alongside Grande in the studio. The pair helped co-write Grande’s massive singles “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings” and have been opening for Grande on her Sweetner World Tour. The songwriters-turned-musicians dropped their first three tracks earlier this year and have now teamed up with Grande for what we’re guessing will be their biggest song to date. Just a hunch.
Known for her close relationship with her fans, Grande answered some questions on Twitter following the release of “Boyfriend” and revealed the inspiration behind the track, which focuses on the difficulty letting yourself be vulnerable in a relationship and risk getting hurt. “We wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap & trust, being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person,” writes Grande.
we wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap & trust, being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person … but also how it feels to have a crippling crush on someone. 🖤 #Boyfriendtonight https://t.co/IHQ3cRC9iy

The popstar said the inspiration for the song came from watching relationships around her and seeing people scared to commit and define their relationship. Has she been watching this season of Love Island? We think so.
well, i feel like this song captures a common theme in the lives of so many people i know ! people want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship & have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone. even tho they want to. https://t.co/28CfLoJseu

Grande picked “Boyfriend” after a fan asked which track she liked more when choosing between the new single and “Break Up With Your Boyfriend, I’m Bored,” and called her latest piece of music a ‘bop with substance.’
“Boyfriend” caps off what has already been a huge week for Grande. The former Nickelodeon star returned to the small screen to film a guest spot on the upcoming season of Kidding. A longtime fan of lead Jim Carrey, Grande gushed about getting to work opposite her idol this week, writing “Nothing is crazier than getting to work with and spend time with someone whom you’ve idolized and adored since before you could speak. Actually, what’s even crazier is discovering that person to be more special and warm and generous in person than you could’ve ever imagined.”
